F’s been studying the gooseberry bushes and looking pleased with herself. She reckons it will be a bumper crop if all these fruit hang on and ripen. (Dangerous prickly d….d things! Mutter darkly….).
Apparently where F comes from the old wives tale told to young children to explain where their siblings came from after a baby arrives in the family is that they were 'found under a gooseberry bush.'
At our place you have to fight your way through bee hives, rhubarb and some dense prickly undergrowth to get to the bottom of the gooseberry bushes so I guess no sensible kid is going to go around looking under gooseberry bushes for stray babies (I wouldn't); but then any sensible kid would quickly work out that it was a load of old cobblers anyway....

Yes, it looks like a good year for gooseberries here too. They are very prickly though.
