Deliberately no photo even tho we could. A man human and two dogs have set up camp in the garden out the front. That's an interesting conundrum for the locals, especially all those who go out of their way to feed stray cats here and across the road at the beach.
Do stray humans get afforded the same compassion as felines?
Humans need more than stray cats do. Provision of food and water might keep the little knot of man and dogs alive, but does it enable him to be human? Humans are social animals, you all need to part of a group you identify with, your social group; it's part of being human. And to be part of a group you need to be able to live more or less like the other members of that group. Camping in the garden says he probably isn't included in any group other than the one he has with his dogs.
I might denigrate dogs, but I have to acknowledge they seem to understand and have bonded with humans better than cats have done over the history of the three species crossing paths, but then dogs are social animals too. They, like humans, prefer to live in packs, have contact with, interact with, and rely on one another; they can establish, read and understand social heirarchy, accept and support leadership and share their resources with members of their 'pack'.
This stray human doesn't belong to the 'pack' around here, so I wonder what will happen to him.
Post script: There were in fact 3 big dogs in that group. The dogs started guarding their space against passersby as the heat went out of the day - having parked themsselves on various nearby footpaths. Sometime during the night they all moved away; melted into darkness. There is a small encampment of homeless people and a lot of dogs under the cliffs not far from here. Maybe they joined that little community.
Unfortunately humans find it easier to be kind to those not of their species
ReplyDeleteI hope the man and his dogs get the help he needs
Especially before your weather turns nasty
It is a sad indictment on humanity that we often show more compassion to stray animals than we do to people who are down on their luck. I hope this man, and his dogs, soon find a more permanent place of residence.

ReplyDeleteWhat a vignette you present to us... I do hope that there was a safe and comfy place that they found together. Hugs and whiskeries, YAM-aunty xxx
