How would you describe the smell of rain to a cat that had lived all its life in a desert?
It rained last night. The smell permeated everything and even woke us up. You know it is the smell of rain even when you can't hear the rain itself.
So ... what is the smell of rain?

ReplyDeleteThere is a term - from the Greek! - for the smell which arises when the rain hits the hot dry earth; PETRICHOR (something to do with 'stone' and 'blood of the gods' I think). Having lived in hot dry countries I know this smell well - and each country has it's own variation of petrichor... I love it! To describe to those who have not experience it, I would say, 'think of the smell of toast - but add water to it...' Hugs and whiskeries, YAM-aunty xxx
You had rain??? No way. Seriously jealous.
ReplyDeleteWhat does it smell like? Damp earth, wet pine needles, fresh crisp breaths of air, cool bananas, something stirring in the universe. Does the stirring universe have a smell?
Rain. It's a feeling too as well as a smell.
I want some yaaaaaah
These are really superb answers - not sure about wet toast. F burns toast so not one of my fav smells. Blood of the gods and universe stirring is big. Rain is pretty fundamental stuff then?
ReplyDeleteWe have lots of rain. I’ll send it your way if you like. We have had more than enough
ReplyDeleteThe smell of rain smells of Mother Earth to me
F says yes please.
DeleteIt's about wet fur, raindrops on whiskers and soggy paws in puddles. Mr Cat hates the rain.
ReplyDeleteMrT not fond of standing in rain either. Puddles also objectionable. Mr B and MrT had an arrangement whereby MrT would actually wipe his feet when he came indoors on a wet day. Bribery might have been involved
