There was a loud BANG...

....and a squillion pigeons lifted off from the street, pavements, even the beach where they have been scavenging the food left out for cats, and alighted on the powerline across the street.

"Alighted" makes it sound delicate. What do you reckon a well fed pigeon weighs?  500grams fully feathered? I suppose that only makes the 30 or so pigeons on the line weigh in total a mere 15kg.

Still, it was 15 kg of flapping and pooping (ok so maybe they weighed a bit less by the time they were settled), and lots of pigeons opted for roosts further away.

The loud bang certainly made F jump.

It's no wonder really that the apartment on the other end of the cable has extensive anti-pigeon fortifications - spikes, flapping shiny tape, and now loud bangs.  (The tape doesn't work by the way, the pigeons use it to decorate their bars and night-clubs. They have set up one inside the air duct from the old kitchen on the first floor.)

  1. In the summer months this town often has firework shows on the seafront. I can't attend as it disturbs the starlings and other birds who have already roosted and they fly out in droves scared out of their wits. What is wrong with some humans?

    1. It could just as easily have been a backfiring motorbike, or something dropped form a great height, or .... who knows? It was a LOUD BANG. Even deaf Tigger looked up.

  3. I might jump at a noise like that - I guess if I could fly I would probably do that as well :)

    1. I, the Tigger, be not afraid of pigeons, but they aren't worth spending any effort to chase. They seem to be in groups and operate a lookout system (like meercats, but with swivelly eyes), so there's no sneaking up on them. Flying rats.
