We wandered out onto the balcony one morning this week to contemplate the view and were struck by the number of ships between us and the horizon.
Without moving we counted 22.
Container ships. Ferries. Tankers. Dry bulk carriers. And more... all under way.
It must have been a busy day at the various terminals around the port of Piraeus. We know that if we go up on the roof, from where we can see the anchorage between Piraeus and Salamis, there are dozens more anchored and waiting for something.
It’s amazing how many ships sale around the world. If I had all the money I’d definitely would choose to just board a huge ship and sail the seas
ReplyDeleteHope all those ships were maintaining a safe distance.
ReplyDeleteWell, seeing as you asked.. we missed by minutes the real excitement the morning the outbound containership cut the minesweeper in 2. We arrived on the balcony in time to wonder why all those tugs and rescue boats were coalescing....

ReplyDeleteOooooooooooooooooohhhhhhhhh droolsome for a shipaholic like me. Sadly, here on the Clyde, the shipping lanes have been very slow indeed. Something to do with pandemics and "breakships" methinks. I keep an eye on things though! Hugs and whiskeries, YAM-aunty xxx
You and Mr B must be cut from the same bolt; he does exactly the same thing here and announces ships like socialites arriving at a posh party. Furrings and purrings Mr T.

DeleteLOL... oh yes, I might have been guilty of that at times... "oh look, there's the Arklow Forest" or "here comes the Maersk Rapier"!!! Mr B might be interested to look at my other blog, and specifically, the 'Shipping by...' series. Yxx
You have a moving view. It must be interesting to watch it all from your balcony.
ReplyDeleteI, the Tigger, prefer the fishing boats. The rowing ones come right into our little bay. I can see the whites of their eyes....
DeleteWhat surprises me is how few crew are needed for these monster ships. When my great grandad was a master mariner, even a small ship would have 20 crew.
ReplyDeleteToo true. F sailed with a tanker from Cyprus to Novorossiyssk (and back) in 1993. She was #21 on the crew list. The ship was an ex BP vessel and her accommodation suggested that when she was BP Vine she had a crew of 56. Quite a few of those berths might have been for trainees. Ships these days could have even fewer but they would nsver see one another and possibly all go mad....
DeleteI really like watching boats on the horizon, usually we see cargo ships or fishing ships.
ReplyDeleteSame here with the occasional yacht race thrown in.
