.... or possibly gaffling spanners... eating utensils, or cutlery even....
'Yaffling spanners' is the sort of slang you'd expect from a Kiwi. However, when you discover that Danish words and place names abound in the English east and north, and way way way back some of F's family originated therabouts, some cogs start to mesh and you wonder that perhaps the slang is not as completely random as it sounds the first time you hear it.
My yaffling spanners are: a fork (once gold coloured) that Mr B acquired with a special offer on catfood, a coffee spoon found in the old rubbish heap at our allotment, and a weird square spoon - origin and purpose unknown. I don't use them to eat of course but they are exclusively mine, for preparing and stirring my food.

ReplyDeleteI very much like hour yafflers, Mr T - and I think pawhpas the square one is simply from a canteen that was all designed that way. A cousin of the spoon on the right. The soup spoon would also have been square but perhaps a little more bulbous in the base, the forks no doubt would be square but the knives would also have been squared off... see where that picture took me??!!!
