Fishing

Recreational fishing was banned in the strictest part of our lockdown.  Until then we had assumed that the little boats we saw pottering around out here on a daily basis were some sort of inshore fishing 'fleet' based in Pasalimani.

They disappeared.

That was the clue.

They came back again when the ban on recreational fishing was lifted.

For recreational fishermen they are remarkably dedicated.  This one rows his boat.  We used to see him pretty much every day, and he has returned since the ban was lifted.  Panagiota tells us that motor fishing boats are not allowed inside our bay, nor is anyone allowed to set nets in the bay.  That explains why this is the only fisher we see inside our little inlet.  All the others fish much further out.  (You can see one in the distance.)

There is another boat like this which has both an engine and oars, but this guy is strictly rowing.  We have seen him pulling his boat along the coast between here and the harbour, even in some quite uncomfortable weather.  That's dedication for you.

Being that keen, one wonders how they managed without their daily fish. Perhaps it's all about meditation... the catch is a bonus! Hugs and wags, YAM-aunty xxx

    1. We do wonder how many of the fishers depend on the food source. Xxx Mr T

    1. One cat here recognizes the regular land based fishers and follows them to their spots when they turn up. When they were banned she disappeared. F saw her recently several blocks away at a 'cat feeding station'.

  3. It's really a beautiful photo! It looks lonely somehow but also beautiful. I too am wondering if maybe he catches his daily fish for the food for the family or for just himself. He must be in really good health to be able to row that boat that far. Especially by himself. We need more rules here.

  4. I bet he's been waiting impatiently all these weeks to get out there again. Most of our fishermen, with engines not oars, are retired and this is how they spend their day. Catching fish is a bonus.
Chatting with other fishermen is the the other plus.

  5. I have been so busy recently - only now catching up on some blogs. Thank you for your kind recent comment son mine. I rather like the idea of fishing, and especially the idea of the night fisherman on the beach, casting lines by the light of the moon... It's probably miserable and freezing, but I can dream...
