Remember that Stripy Chimney? Waterside Park

Landmark chimney.

This is an old industrial site that is gradually being turned into a park.  Lipsamaton Multifunctional Park, Drapetsona.

Parks are good.  Our neighbour told us about this one.  She pointed it out the day we went to the Customs Office (oh, I haven't told you about that outing have I?  I will line up a post on it).

Anyway F and Mr B could ride their bikes there by going around the ferry port.  They reported back that there is a narrow strip of some very new development along the waterside overlooking Salamina - including a nice smooth concrete bike lane - a couple of cafe's, 2 outdoor performing art spaces, some sports facilities (5 a side football, beach volleyball). There are plantings of new trees that will have beautiful pink blossoms in future years, places for skateboards and 'hopscotch', a model aeroplane club, some sculptures, places for graffiti madness, some very atmospheric derelict industrial buildings from some past era when even industrial buildings looked like art, and loads and loads of open space hillside with wildflowers all over.  (Oh, and some old gun emplacements.)

Very photogenic rubbish bin there...

I have yet to visit bodily (I have to make do with photos), but given that we could bike there more or less without going on roads, I reckon a backpack outing should be in order.

Since Panagiota told us about it, we've told all our friends, and they have told all their friends....   ...and lots of people seem to have been surprised to find out about it.

Humans who live in concrete cities need spaces like that to wander about it.  We hope that it doesn't get over developed and lose the hillsides of wild flower spaces. (Just think of all the mice and small criturs that might be living in that undergrowth.)

  2. looks and sounds like a good place to go in your back pack.. I like the old fort like building. Hope they don't tear it down. my hometown in Savannah GA USA, has 3 forts and the gun embattlements look a lot like these do... they preserved them and made them into state parks. my kids spent many happy hours as kids playing in them. back then they were free, not there is a fee but worth it. maybe you should stop spreading the news, or it might fill up with PEOPLE...
