Obscured by Smoke

The arms of land that embrace the Saronic Gulf spread out in front of us, are obscured in a veil of smoke.

Both sides; the Attica Peninsula, and the Peloponnese.

For two mornings in a row now we have watched helicopters with a big bucket on a long string head from somewhere north and west of us, out across the Gulf in the direction of Lavrio.

Yesterday at the office I overheard the office manager telling F that someone had found a 'fire bomb' on the mountain close to where she lives.  She lives in the zone where urban meets rural on the side of a hill/mountain in the Athens southern suburbs (between us and Lavrio).  There are walking trails on the mountain.  Someone walking on the mountain had found something designed to start a fire in the absence of anyone to actually ignite it, and provided it with gas canisters and petrol to make sure it got going and spread quickly.

It seems they don't even need to be there to light a match to start it.  They can be safely miles away when they put thousands of other people's lives, homes, pets and businesses at risk of being totally destroyed.

Fortunately someone found that one before it went off.  We hope the police can extract enough information from it to find the perpetrator, and we wish they were allowed to hang the scumbag up by their ears and light a fire under their feet.

Even slow roasting would be too good for them.  Let's make it a really smoky slow fire so that they choke as well as getting burned slowly.

OMC, Mr T and F, this is just devastating news. It is a known phenomena, of course and all too often proves to be someone who actually fights fires for a living. There were some prosecutions for same in OZ when I was there... and would you believe, I am currently following a podcast called Firebug?! That pertains to fires in the USA. Oh I surely do hope that your Greek guys can indeed track down the perpetrator of this crime. Hugs and whiskeries, YAM-aunty xxx

  5. We are covered in smoke again today. There can't be much left of Evia.
A 14 yr old was arrested for setting 9 fires in one area. He liked watching flames.
I wonder if he'd enjoy flames licking his feet

    1. We are soooo sorry for Evia - we loved that place when we visited and so much destruction. In reality what DO you do with a 14 year old like that?
