Although the rain started on Thursday of the previous week it never really went away and on the night of Wednesday (just after I'd been sizing up the chickens) Hughey (some sort of weather controller from what I can gather), just opened the sluice gates, went on a bender, and left them that way for the next 36 hours or so.
WIFI stopped working almost immediately.
We spent all Thursday indoors.
Even after Hughey had woken up and wrestled the sluice gates closed, rain water continued to spill out of his reservoir from time to time through Friday, Saturday, Sunday (and even today).
Today we are back in Piraeus, and F is at work. My condo was moved indoors last night and Mr B and I are contemplating the grey skies and occasional rain from the relative comfort of our respective armchairs (relative to being outdoors).
All that rainwater over-topped the reservoir outside our little holiday house by the sea. When we got home on Friday from a rain-soaked tour of an old fortress, the sea was out of its bed and trying to come into mine.
It didn't quite make it fortunately.
However a few boats along the quayside were trying to take to the roads instead for a little while.
Old Fortress: Agia Mavra
It's big and mostly only the outside walls remain |
History of old Fortress: here I believe this is what they call a 'chequered' history.
Ah yes, rain. Our constant companion.
ReplyDeleteYeah - we shouldn't be complaining aye? It has washed the place clean.
DeleteWelcome back to the ether world, we thought you were just busy having a grand old time. sorry the storm rained on your parade and almost wet your bed... if only those big and very old walls could talk
ReplyDeleteIt's probably just as well those walls can't talk. Imagine the gossip, the arguments (what one saw and another hadn't), and the confusion they could create!
DeleteI saw a video made on the island of Samos, where my father’s family comes from
ReplyDeleteSo much rain. I’m glad your ok and made it home safely
Isn't Samos where they had a really bad earthquake last year? They don't need flooding as well.

ReplyDeleteCrikey, efurrybuddy had dibs on that fortress, eh?! Sorry that the last few days of your trip were waterlogged, Tigger and co... it's no better here, so I can't even attempt to send you any sunshine. It's one thing having the boats rise to the roads but if the cars try to sail, then you know there's trouble afloat... hugs and whiskeries, YAM-aunty xxx
Dear Yam-Aunty - we managed to stay on the road on the way back despite a few flash downpours that obliterated the road/cars in front etc. We did see one lake near Aggrinio where the lake had left its bed and invaded farms, orchards and houses - but not hte road fortunately. Fz & Pz Mr T
DeleteThat sounds like it was quite a storm - hopefully not a foretaste of your winter to come.
ReplyDeleteMxx
So do we - on the other hand the land needed rain, and it has probably filled water reservoirs and cisterns that also needed it.
