Thanks to Aunty-Sandra

Thanks to Aunty-Sandra aka Madsnapper, we have some bright new flowers on the balcony.

F looked them up in t'internet and read that they like intense heat and punishing sunlight.  That's LIKE, not just 'survive', or 'can handle'... they LIKE it.

Intense heat and punishing sunlight our specialty. What's more they 'seed freely and come back next year'. We are going to shake them all over the garden downstairs.

Their little flowers in neon colours only last a few hours. They come out new every morning and by mid afternoon have done their dash and are folding their spent petals in to enclose the capsule of all those seeds we hope they are making.

Thank you Aunty-Sandra. We are a bit slow on the uptake but we got there in the end. Now we are going to convert a whole neighbourhood.

(PS they are called gleestritha over here which is apparently a reference to that gloopy juice they produce if you break them.)

  3. I've got those all over the garden and in pots. I don't think I've ever seen them with flowers though. I'll have to go and check. You can eat them too!

  4. Yay, they are beautiful and they do love bright sun. mine only bloom when the sun is on them, when the shade hits them they fold for the day. the one thing you can do is break off on piece, stick it in a small pot and it will grow and make more. the bigger they get the more you can break pieces off. sometimes on will wilt and fall off. don't throw it away, but it in damp soil in a tiny pot and it will grow. it even works if you lay it down on the soil and keep it damp. put it where it gets the most sun the longest time. mine blooms from 10 am to 4 pm because it is in the sun that long

  5. Oooh what pretty flowers. Although the traits of being able to tolerate intense heat and punishing sunlight are not ones we look for in plants in Aberdeen...
    Toodle-oo!

  7. Sounds like a rather fascinating plant (I read the comments as well). Sharing them with the downstairs garden would be great :)
