Madiz

Madiz

Our photo is a bit indistinct - that is phone cameras for you.  Mr B says he isn't a nerd, but he does sit on the balcony with his AIS tracker thing on and identifies the ships, yachts and large pleasure motorboats going past.

Madiz went past yesterday and might have gone unnoticed because she was preceded in the same piece of view by the Christina O,  (This story isn't about the Christina O so if you are even vaguely interested you can do your own research on her.  If you guessed that O stands for Onassis, you were correct.) and Mr B got his identifications a bit messed up.  We got the right one in the end - the smaller (prettier) one.

Madiz was built in Troon (Firth of Clyde) in 1902.  In 2006 she became famous in shipping terms, she underwent a major refit during 2004 - 2006, completing the Special Survey with Lloyd's Register of Shipping in August 2006. She was re-classified with Lloyd's in the original class of +100A1 and at 104 years old, she was the oldest ship in the world to ever do so.

I, the Tigger, am unmoved by ships, but F pointed out that Yam-Aunty might be impressed with this piece of history; so there you have it Yam-Aunty.... a little ship that originated in your part of the world.

  1. Gail thinks the little ship from Troon is cool. (Did you know she used to work for Lloyd's Register ? But her job had absolutely nothing to do with shipping!)

    1. How could you work for Lloyds register and have nothing to do with shipping - what else do they register? (F says she can imagine that htey do register other stuff but didb't know it before.)

Tigger dear, please convey to F and Mr B my gratitude for this little glimpse of living history! What a grand lady of the seas is Madiz. I spotted a wreck being towed this afternoon along that Clyde water... but it didn't show up on the AIS which was disappointing, so I can relate nothing about it. Oh well. Hugs and whiskeries, YAM-aunty xxx

  3. I know Troon, nowadays I think known for the golf course! My late husband's father was a ships carpenter, but in the Glasgow shipyards.

  4. Mittens says to tell you she is not impressed by ships either - they mean water, and she doesn't like water at all - not even as rain! :)

    1. I'm with Mittens - water is the devil's creation. And you can dissolve if you go out in rain.

  5. I have a flight tracker and when we hear a plane or helicopter overhead I use it to identify what, who and where it’s going.
Yup I’m just like Mr. B

  7. Gosh Lloyds Shipping Co is still around here and has been for many years. Cats are so nosey though, Bruno and Mr Cat are always on the windowsills looking out at the world. In the new house we are going to make a cat highway for them as suggested by Jackson Galaxy.
