Postcards - London Bridge

Not so much London Bridge as what you can see FROM London Bridge.  These are some serious landmarks for London

Tower Bridge - downstream

Shard - south end of London Bridge

St Paul's Cathedral - north bank upstream.  The two dark towers in the foreground are Cannon Street Rail Station and the bright strip is the railway line into it.

And the bridge guardians of London Bridge itself; the inverted cross of St Paul on the shield.

It is not unusual for foreigners to think Tower Bridge is London Bridge - there is so much history attached to London Bridge that you expect something spectacular.  It was a crossing on the Thames in Roman times.  There are nursery rhymes about it burning.  There used to be houses and business on the mediaeval bridge (that was finally replaced in 1831).  We are on the second 'new' bridge since then.  The last one (we understand) was carefully deconstructed and reassembled in the US (in the Arizona desert) after it started sinking into the bed of the river Thames.  We do wonder if the buyer really understood what they were getting...  There is a lake there (Arizona) now so it still has purpose as a bridge.

I reckon those bridge guardians are some kind of feline - I'm prepared to claim them at any rate, even if the tail is a bit fanciful.

Oh yes, I am sure that Griffins have feline heritage, Tigger mate. Ggrrrrraaafffffff..rrrpppprrrpprrr. I must say, I am super impressed with F's postcards once more; that one of Tower Bridge and the naval vessel is rather yummy... Hope F is feeling stronger and fighting 'the tide' today. Hugs and whiskeries, YAM-aunty xxx

  4. Actually there are about 30 bridges on the tidal part of the Thames. Many are really pretty (for bridges) - perhaps we should do some postcards on bridges. Xxx Mr T

Such a beautiful bridge and to see it all lit up at night will be magical.

  6. The guardian's claws definitely look feline. Not so sure about the tail and as for the wings . . .
    London's bridges are always beautiful.

  7. The Guardians look a bit equine too - but the claws are catlike. I do like the sights of London but am so pleased not to live there (or anywhere near for that matter). Do you long for Greece I wonder; or are you happy to be in the UK again? I bet you wish you had the weather at least.
PS Thanks for other comment on my blog _ i did pass to my publisher but have not heard back
