Iron Bridge

1779; another dot on a time line. This time the world's first cast iron bridge. Built by Abraham Darby III over the most dramatic part of the Severn Gorge at Coalbrookdale. The iron was smelted in foundries already in operation along the gorge, and the components were caste in open sand more or less on site.

I love this bridge and have visited it several times. A sunny day, a seat on the riverbank to (eat in ice cream)... to admire the engineering feat, the beauty and design.

I think that NZ Flax (phormium tenax) in the foreground really compliments the scene - points to the bridge, reflects the colours. Of course I would think that.

  1. Great photos. I am sure the Phormium made you think of New Zealand?

  4. it is beautiful. fits in with the natural beauty unlike our bridges that are concrete and aslo fit in with the background of concrete and paving every where we look. have not seen a small natural looking bridge since my childhood and now wonder if there are any like this here
