Silbury Hill

Rising, conical perfection, out of the surrounding flatness, Silbury Hill is considersbly larger than my photo suggests.
It is younger than Avebury Henge (estimates are 4500 and 4400 years respectively for the henge and the hill) and within sight of the Avebury circle.

An artist has helpfully portrayed bronze age people digging up chalk and carrying it in baskets to form what would then have been a gleaming white hill. You might be able to biggify the info in the photo for construction details in case you are planning to leave something monumental for future generstions to ponder.

I am always in awe of the giant structures created by our ancient ones... with nothing but sheer physical effort. YAM xx

  3. I wonder if Peter Gabriel could have made a record called: Sidbury Hill? It is a rather magnificent man-made construction.

  4. I couldn't read the notice so looked it up instead. 4 million man hours of work struck me - extraordinary.

  5. when i see all these monuments all i think about is how many slaves died building it. that overshadows the fact they built something with brain and back breaking labor.

  6. I'm like Nobby wondering what they were thinking building that huge monument. I like reading about these ancient sites, so many years old.

  8. A barrow? I'm fascinated with English history, no chance of us having them here.

  9. I'm always delighted to catch a glimpse of Silbury. It's an oddity as it doesn't contain any burials. Have recently found out about Barton Hills tumuli in Bedfordshire which are not dissimilar in style. Arilx
