Well I question necessity - people lived without them a couple of generations ago. We chose to ignore the wisom of their buildings and working hours because we believed we could manipulate the environment. Chickens coming home to roost....
They are employing lots of alternatives - lets say supplementary ways - to cool the environment here and dramatically reduce the demand for these ac units. And these individual units are not particularly efficient, and simply make the back of that building even hotter.
living in Florida, this is a common sight, and living in the heat here with out AC could actually kill Seniors. Most of our AC units are not in plain sight like these, but in crowded places would be.
Did anor long walk yesterday. The tempersture drop when the trail went into vegetation was very noticeable. Everyone who doubts regreening might save us should be made to go on that walk.
True, but people did until about 70 years ago and built homes, and lived lives adapted to the pattern of the days and seasons. We lost or ignored that when we started building stacked up concrete boxes for homes. Singapore is trying to relearn some of the old wisdom.

ReplyDelete😱... that would count as a Saturday Symmetry shot... but goodness me... YAM xx
Yup - horrors! They do back onto a 'green space' and greenery is being coaxed back.
DeleteThat is quite a sobering image.
ReplyDeleteThere was an entire street like that there. The traditional buildings have been cut off from natural breezes by blocks and blocks of highrise.
DeleteA blot on the landscape but a necessity I suppose?

DeleteNo real alternative

ReplyDeleteIt was a very common sight in Greece to, but the electricity demand in summer was sometimes more than the infrastructure could supply.
DeleteOh, dear! Sad but required.
ReplyDeleteLike I said to Angela, we coped without a couple of generations ago.
DeleteDefinitely prefer trees!

DeleteLooks about right for today's world, not sure I agree with that many though
ReplyDeleteNot the most aesthetic of sights. But I’d hate to have to live there without them
