Up at the allotment on Monday harvesting some leeks and celeriac, I found this lacey skeleton of the 'carapace' that encloses a tomatillo.
Delicate yet tough; it has survived torrential rains, blast freezer frosts, storm force winds, and even the odd sunny day. Just so that I could discover it, nestled in the lee of a straw bale, on a sunny day in a bleak January when even the smallest hints of natures great beauty are appreciated.
I was at the allotment to harvest some of the remaining winter vegetables - leeks, celeriac, kale - and like a gift from the faerie world this delicate piece of lace just shuffled past my feet; like a cat toy gently rolling into the peripheral vision of the napping, but ever vigilant, feline. An enticement to play. A hint of a dream. A glimmer of a smile. The gilded globe of a tiny lantern, designed to pattern the light.
Beautiful construction
ReplyDeleteOh look and it even has some mud attached 🙄
DeleteThat is lovely. I can see where designers find their inspiration.
ReplyDeleteThat is so beautiful!
ReplyDelete(I bet the winter veggies were good too.)
your last line, The gilded globe of a tiny lantern, designed to pattern the light.
ReplyDeleteis totally awesome and I can see the globe without looking at it just reading your words. I wonder if there is a way to preserve it? like maybe spray glue or shellac.. it would be so pretty on a shelf. thanks for sharing this find with us. it is truly amazing art from nature.
I guess you could preserve it but there will be another crop next year and sometimes nature in its most fragile, ephemeral, fleeting-ness is all the better appreciated for not being a permanent thing.
DeleteI checked out the tomatillo and have never seen one or the lacy shell either until today
ReplyDeleteYou wouldn't normally see the lacey shell. it is all that remains of the leaves that once enclosed the fruit. The veins.
DeleteThat is so tender and beautiful even amazing.
DeleteThat's such a beautiful find. A keeper. So delicate and stronger than iron.
ReplyDeleteJust so delicate and beautiful.
ReplyDeleteOh my goodness you have shown me something quite breathtaking.
ReplyDeleteYour last sentence spoke volumes about the wonder of Nature . What a beautiful description.
