Great Copse

Litterpick with Havant Community Litterpickers at Great Copse this morning.

Early bluebells, wood anemones, lashings of mud (Nobby), and the trash left by the lovely person who feeds foxes.

It is a lovely but over-used small woodland, with a stream, surrounded by housing estates.  The scuttlebutt is that the council wants to raze it and fill in the gap with another housing estate. Knowing our local council and the types of 'development' proposals they favour the scuttlebutt doesn't surprise me in the least. A large percentage of our councillors don't live in housing estates and don't have to take their leisure in the limited green space available close to home. They can afford luxurious outdoor experiences.

Someone needs to discover a rare, or better still never before known, insect, spider, or amphibian in the copse and get it protected.

  1. The litter will be used as an excuse to get rid of it as well. I was reminded of an episode of vicar of dibley where they were trying to save their town from being turned into a dam. Owen kept saying he could breed a three legged cow. When asked if he had. He said no. But all it takes is cutting off one leg of a normal cow. So your comment made me giggle

Isn't it a constant heartbreak when the litter turns up among the pristine? As for the building plans... tsk. An orchid or other such would be great to find - keep looking! YAM xx

  3. Wow, you have proper spring! These little oases of nature accessible from built up areas are so precious. But what a shame about all that plastic.

  4. Councils seem intent on covering every green space with tightly-packed dwellings. It's more noticeable the closer one is to a large city, as every village and market town becomes a faceless dormitory. Perhaps an endangered creature or flower could be 'introduced' to Great Copse.

  5. maybe you could find a rare something and accidentally transport it there to be found?? sounds like our councils here, the people who make all the decisions don't live in the places they make decisions about. or care about anyone but themselves. that trash just makes me angry. they should clean up their own mess or don't make the mess in the first place.

  6. All those plastic trays would make great slug pubs.
