Backyard Chronicles

Cute, very cute, very scared, baby fox.

Mr B rang me at work to share his excitement that a baby fox had showed up in the backyard and was snacking on food put out for the crows.  The video he managed to film was of a little fox that should still be with its Mum. We both had the same thought....has she been poisoned too?

We have unblocked the cat trapdoor in the fence to enable wee fox to come and go more easily and Mr B is wondering how to give wee fox an exclusive supply of his own food.

Foxes are a sure fire way to discourage rodents....

I hope wee fox gets to grow up into a big healthy fox.

Oh my...as long as Baby fox sticks to this diner and doesn't get tempted by any rats that happen to be lying around as easy take-out it should be ok...YAM xx

    1. I think - hope - that wee fox is too small to deal with prey - even recently dead stuff. We are hoping that dog food is a more attractive/palatable/easy to chew on option for a wee fox. See more tomorrow.

  5. Pretty little thing! And pretty to have the purple flowers in the shot too!

  6. Yes, the horrible problem with poisoning rats is that some innocent - cat, dog, fox, raptor - eats the poisoned rat and dies, too. Humans are just so very stupid.

    1. Rats used to get poisoned on our farm in NZ, but they have no natural predators. Even so, where I am in this bit of my life I'm uncomfortable poisoning anything - even persistent weeds.

  7. Every time we put leftovers our for our foxy visitor, either the crows or the magpies get it. Foxy seems to come in the wrong nights, so the food is still there in the mornings, and gone before 6 o'clock. We're puzzling over how to make a fox-only feeder too.

    1. When you have worked it out could you kindly let us know? (See tomorrow for more on the fox - these camera trap things have turned out to be quite useful.) We have a gap under our shed - I built it on raised piles - and wee fox rushes under there. We could put food under the shed but although it would be out of reach for crows, we worry that Roland will be the main benefactor.

  9. I hope Mr Fox catches lots of rodents, usually our cats catch mice at this time of year.

  10. Foxes are an introduced species and wreak destruction on our native animals
    Not to mention my chickens.
Still if they leave the chickens alone I am happy for them to live in the area and I’d never poison them.
