Butser Cutting

Butter Cutting is where the A3 slices through the east shoulder of Butser Hill (Hampshire UK).  The old route of the A3 climbed up over that shoulder, which forms part of the South Downs, and remains (in part) to the east of the cutting in use as a cycle track between the coastal regions and the hinterland town of Petersfield.

It's a bit of a slog, especially if you did 40 plus miles on Saturday and then signed up for a 'short social' ride on Sunday to discover the ride leader had designs on slogging over the Downs and back.

Needless to say it wasn't just up/down in each direction but did include a lot of shady lanes, scenic summit routes, glorious vistas, and a few streams and ponds.

At the top of the OLD A3 over the Downs, I photographed nature.... to make up for all the wonderful roadside flowers I had been obliged to leave unphotographed (including bluest blue campanula and pink bee orchids).

Old Man's Beard (Clematis vitalba)

Umbellifera

Verbascum nigrum) Dark Mullein

Evening Primrose

Buddleia (and bumble bee)

Also Buddleia

Not sure (looks like Mallow flower but the leaves are wrong)

Oregano

Teasels
(flowers for bees & seeds for finches)

That's a fine record of the country flowers... I do think that our wildflower population has been extra special this year. YAM xx

  2. That must have been worth the slog.
Our evening primrose in the garden is doing really well this year. Must be all the rain.

  3. Just wishing i could ride like you do, and glad you can do it and did do it and found time to snap the natured you saw. thanks for your comment about the pool. that reminded me it is the back up if all else fails. I would just have to dip it out and pour into his bowl and he would never know the difference.

  4. I find that if one wants to take a breather when cycling up a steep hill on a bicycle then a stop to take a photo of some interesting wildflower is an excellent excuse!

  6. Lovely showing of wildflowers. Our garden is spilling over with oregano; it would take over if it had its way. I have a great fondness for teasel.
