Population about 600 (people)
A town where someone puts fresh flowers in the public toilets
A town where you can stand in the middle of the main street at rush hour.
Self styled Greenshell Mussel capital of the world, there is a lot of mussel themed decor... engraved into the concrete sidewalks...
Adorning various buildings...
....including the police station....
Nice to think even the police have a sense of humour (or are invested in local identity).
Real greeshell mussels for sale in the grocery shop
(Priorities.🤔)
....a museum (every town in NZ has one of those - most are devoted to 'Early Settlers')...
...and a variey of dwellings from early settlers to architectural modern
I'll leave you with a couple more shots from the main street, the Town Hall and the fishing tackle shop

ReplyDeleteLove, love, love it!!! YAM xx
It has a liesurely way about it. Xx
DeleteWhat a nice place to visit or live even.
ReplyDeleteIt had better be. I'm sinking my retirement savings in land up the Sound from there. My plan to build a house and grow stuff is making a slow start (slower than I had imagined anyway).
DeleteAny place that puts fresh flowers in the bathroom is one that I’d love to visit. It shows pride in where you live. It does look like a beautiful place
ReplyDeleteThe flowers tickled me.
DeleteIt looks a lovely, thriving, giving community. I love the fresh flowers in the loo and the green mussels everywhere.
ReplyDeleteGroups in cafes suggest a lot of retirees and good social activities.
DeleteMind you, who else has cafe time mid morning on a week day?
DeleteLovely looking little town. I’m thinking this is your brother’s patch? How far will your place be from ‘civilisation’
ReplyDeleteThat’s a huge looking Goanna Mural…are there a lot of them found around the area?
The local green lipped mussels (well the ones who make their way into capsules) do wonders for my arthritic hands. Had no trouble with them at all since taking the supplements.
Bro lives just out of Ashburton in mid Canterbury. Havelock will be my local 'town'. We are about 12 miles (10 of those winding gravel road) from Havelock. Mussels are farmed in Pelorous and Kenepuru Sounds (they grow them on ropes that hang under anchored floating structures). I'm glad the extract works for you. I always wondered whether it might be more snake oil than effective.
DeleteAnd a memorial to Ernest Rutherford...and good cafés!!
ReplyDeleteYes. Far more cafes than the population warrants but population swells in summer and lots of tourists pass through here between Picton (the interisland ferry) and Tasman Bays.
DeleteEvery time we've stopped there there have been well laden cyclists on the end to end route refuelling..but what I liked most was that it wasn't just tourists in the cafés
DeleteIt has it share of truck driver food too. 😁
DeleteLooks like a classic kiwi town. I love looking at your NZ photos. We get frozen green lipped NZ mussels on the half shell here. I must check which town they're from.
ReplyDeleteIt really looks like a lovely place to live. The fresh flowers are charming.
ReplyDeleteI don't think I've ever been to Havelock. So are you back in NZ permanently?
ReplyDeleteWorking on creating my forever home.
