In about the centre of that photo you might perceive a small bump, a rocky pointy thing, a remnant of some larger hill or outcrop.
It goes by the name Mt Sunday in English. Acquiring the summit of said bump takes about 45 minutes on foot from the road that passes it's base; the road that comes from civilization to Mt Potts Station (behind the photographer) and carries on up to Erewhon Station and the headwaters of the Rangitata River. (That is said river in the background.)
It was blowing a Nor'West hooley that day; hot and dry in the foreground, raining up on the main divide in the background.
Erewhon is alleged to be nowhere spelt backwards. Any literate person can see that ain't so. It is the title of a book by Samuel Butler - see the links.
It is more popular with tourists than it's remote location might suggest. It featured as a location in Peter Jackson's Lord of the Rings. (Edoras)
It is a very long way down a narrow, corrugated and dusty gravel road. We drove there in a big lazy old 4 wheel drive tank. On the way out we saw someone in an opentop, low slung sports car edging off the last of the tarmac at Lake Clearwater.... oh dear. 25km of dust and corrugations is going to hurt.

It’s stunning. When we did the cruise to NZ. We did a bus tour for the day. I think we went somewhere near there. As the bus driver said on your left is where LOTR was filmed and on the right is where the Narnia movie was filmed. I was one happy little nerd in the middle lol
