Piwakawaka

This little guy flew into the workshop and started chattering away at me from a perch on one of the cranes. It is clearly a good story, or possibly a litany of complaints.  Either way there is some forceful punctuation at about a minute and 8 seconds. Maybe he was telling me to pay attention.

They fly into the breezeway between the office and workshop and perch on my vintage bike to give me the benefit of their opinions most days, and to insist that I open the door and let them fly through the building rather than go over it.

Their being indoors is said to be a portent of a death in the family. Undeterred, Mum used to invite them in and encourage them to catch spiders and flies. We let them fly about indoors too. They do a spectacular job on clearing flies.  This year's young are just in the process of learning to navigate in the house and find their way out again without drama. (Drama stirs up the dogs and the place goes Bedlam until the youngster finds the open window or door.)

Borrowed image so you can see little piwakawaka at its finest.

  3. 1st let me say I entertained myself for a minute trying to say piwakawaka out loud. I love the name, and the tiny bird and wow, could you send me a few? our backyard is full of flies.. and when one gets in the house I almost injured myself trying to swat it. we also have a ton of spiders. I could not stop laughing at the sound of that little bird, he sure had a story to tell... and he does have punctuation even though I don't speak his language. adorale

  7. I've heard of that Maori legend about them, they are very curious birds, use to see them all the time in Kerikeri.
