Nature Friday

Chestnut season here. On Monday I was camped in the shade of, but not under, a spreading chestnut tree.

Horse chestnuts.

I find their brown shinyness and delicate swirling patterns irresistable.

  2. I live in a Chestnut growing area of France, but I only know of ONE Conker tree (that I used to own). Do you play 'Conkers'?

    1. I have never seen it played. It wasn't a game of our youth in NZ.

  3. the last one has two eyes, just one eye open, the other closed.. I have never seen a chestnut except in photos. love the markings and love furniture with the chestnut look. they are beautiful and would make a pretty decoration in a beautiful bowl.

    1. Saponin yes - I'd forgotten about that. Must remember to try it when there is less other stuff going on.

  5. There are many, many chestnut trees in our area, sweet and horse. Conkers are lovely to hold and handle and easier to extricate from their less prickly coats than sweet chestnuts.

    1. I love filling my pockets with them. Their glory fades but they are a delightful part of this season.

  6. The nuts are quite beautiful, but their shells are a bit scary....and WOW, they do look like eyeballs!

  7. MOL MOL MOL I thoroughly enjoyed you chestnuts. I thought the first one was a marble.
Many years ago, probably mid 1960's, I saw my first chestnut and tasted roasted chestnuts in New York City. Then in the mid 1990's while staying at a B&B in the NC mountains is actually saw them on the ground. Til then I had no idea we had chestnuts in NC.
