Green

Green is the predominant colour around here - even the water reflects green.

Black seems to be the fashion du jour for new houses here. (Yuck!)

Never one to be a dedicated follower of fashion I plan to buck the trend.

I've borrowed this image from the Internet because it is built in the material and colour we plan to use. The colour is called scoria.

After months (possibly years) of deliberation about what we will call our place (including contemplating what language to use) we have finally woken up to the obvious -The Red House.  There won't be another red house in this bay.

This was the inspiration.  It is in Staveley in Mid-Canterbury.  I actually knocked at their door, told them I loved it, wanted to build one like it and what is the colour called?  The owner was chuffed to bits that I had asked and I just love this warm colour in their green setting.

I'm fairly sure the locals with all their blacks and muted greys are going to be outraged.

They'll get used to it.

Love it!!! I like the corrugated look, too. Yeah, that boxy black/charcoal/graphite thing has predominated the last decade and I am certain will not age well. This, however, will only grow in character, I'm sure of it! YAM xx

  5. Isn't red just as traditional?! Te Whare Whero sounds good too.
You have beautiful views from your new home..it is worth the white road or watery commute choice!

    1. It is a great name because that colour also appears in pre-european pigments used here but Mr B really struggles with the sounds of our other official language (actually we have 3 sign language is an official language here too). 2 years on from purchase he still can't say Kai Uma even when I point out that the components are just names of a dancer and an actress.

    2. Oh and it's not about tradition - the covenants require low reflectivity and sympathy with the background. Just saying that has inspired a post subject.
