Crafted II

Hacked out of a branch pruned out of our flowering apple tree last spring.

It started as a demonstration to my nephew on how to use a small axe to chop out a rough shape before starting to carve with a knife.  Having shaped up a blank I decided to finish the job.

Proportions are a bit out of whack and it needs some reshaping and finishing but I guess it will be a serving spoon.  The two tone effect is made by the wood having spalted while it was lying out in the garden all summer.

I was surprised that my hands actually coped with it and might make some more.  I enjoy carving spoons out of green wood.

(Cleaning up stuff in my drafts folder.... this dates back to last August in UK. I guess said spoon is now in a container currently sitting in Singapore.)

  1. The idea of wood carving appeals to me but I'm pretty sure my efforts would be laughable.Yours, on the other hand, could grace a craft stall.

  4. That's a skill I've never tried, and I love the idea of making your own kitchen tools from your own wood.

  6. I am laughing at the drafts, I just deleted 3 really old drafts, I did not like what I did and they had been there for months. I kept thinking I would use them. I am so impressed with all your skills and this is totally impressive
