Sobering.
Thought provoking.
Humbling.
Just reading the notes (sources of information at the back) provides insight on the imbalances created by poverty, skin colour, place of birth.
I have been so fortunate to have lived a loved, well resourced, well educated, white middle-class life with strong family bonds.
One might say recommended reading for anyone with a conscience but it is those who wield power or authority without social conscience or who lack respect for 'otherness' who need to take lessons from this book.

ReplyDeleteOh yes, I read that a few years back - every thing you said. However, it is one of the dichotomies of such things, that it will draw only those to whom it already speaks. That said, if only one, just one, of a different frame of mind is persuaded by it, then, just like the black sheep of scripture, thanks could be given... YAM xx

ReplyDeleteAs Yam intimates, those who should read it are probably the ones who won't.
ReplyDeleteIndeed also my view but the book gives one example of a change of mind/conduct in such a person - a change almost too radical to believe is real. I don't expect the author to have made it up so sometimes the right combination of events produces remarkable results.
