Woodpeckers

Crows might be my personal bête noir but at least they don’t attack beehives.  Woodpeckers on the other hand, are occasional visitors to my garden and Mr B is concerned they might decide that fatballs are less interesting than the contents of the beehive.  Woodpeckers can completely destroy beehives.  In winter an ‘anti-woodpecker’ cage goes around my bees.

Although we hear they hammering away in the Spring time, they don’t nest in our trees and must be in the big trees somewhere along the edge of the nearby common land.  I’ve wandered up the lane and checked out the common but the huge open space is a bit un-nerving.  Sometimes the towing dogs get released on the common and go careering about like out-of-control wind-up toys.
