Moth Coloured

I pointed it out while F was watering the plants. She is so clumsy she might have stepped on it. (Her Mum wouldn't let her go to dance lessons when she was a kid - called her the 'fairy elephant' - but F realized in later years it was a function of economics rather than a belief that F couldn't dance. F can't dance (she sort of wobbles, I know because we do a lot of it), but that is beside the point really.) This is meant to be a nature Friday post, but this week has fried our brains and we aren't really prepared for anything. So you get a moth - and a picture of me supervising work from home. Me and that moth have colours from the same palette. I reckon it's Tigger-coloured.

Postcards - Borough Market & Nearby

Borough, the unremarkably named community on the southern end of the London Bridge, has a covered produce market with, apparently, rather ancient roots. It adjoins the grounds of Southwark Cathedral Southwark was traditionally a starting point for Christians making the pilgrimage to Thomas Becket's shrine in Canterbury, and it is pilgrims travelling from Southwark who are the subject of Chaucer's Canterbury Tales . These days the produce market is underneath an area where a load of railway lines converge on London Bridge Station. And so you get art installations like this ... on the brickworks that hold up the railway lines over the streets. Borough Market has reinvented itself in the last couple of decades and gone from a couple of fresh fruit and veg distributors who supplied commercial eateries, to an expanded area of vendors of food of all kinds and styles. Broomhandle

Football resumed with vigour on Saturday morning. Bang bang bang. Running feet. Screaming. Silence We peered off the balcony to see a half circle of concentrating youngsters watching the smallest one squeeze himself under a parked car. Their ball was stuck underneath. He got it out but it wasn't the only time or the only car it got stuck under. When she went to the laiki F took an old broomhandle and propped it on the wall telling them "You need that". They put it to good use but they still didn't invite F to be goalie. And would you blame them? Grandmas do gardening, not football. The 'I told you so' look. They put the broomhandle back when they finished for the day.

Filming

Today stared like any other: pat F on the face, insist on getting my breakfast, supervise watering plants and the doing of Pilates, and then get trotted off to work. Today however, F forgot we were to be visited by an internal auditor from head office (Luxembourg). Fortunately the auditor is a fan of felines and more interested in bookkeeping and regulatory compliance than how the office desks are allocated. I raised the small matter of my honorarium but it fell on deaf ears. I did get extra chin scratches, I suppose that had to count for something. And he did take a photo of me and Donkey...which he hasn't absolutely promised will not go in his report. Bother... I reckon he should be advocating that all offices have a feline overseer to ensure the proper running of things. As we meandered down the hill towards home this evening we could see a 'commotion gathered around the top of our rickety stairs to the beach. Taniwha

This stamp must have been around in New Zealand in 1967. In 1967 New Zealand changed its currency from Pounds, Shillings and Pence, to Dollars and Cents, and this stamp reappeared with 20c written on it. F has one of each in her stamp book. That's a representation of a Taniwha. Depending on where you come from in New Zealand it is a taneefaa, or a taneewaa. These days most people would say it with an F sound, but the 'wh' can be quite gutteral. We have made the picture below - which we borrowed - into a link to the Te Ara Encyclopedia of New Zealand (where we borrowed the picture from.) It looks like a dragon, but as Taniwha generally live in water they are not reputed to be breathers of fire. They just have fiery eyes. Click on the picture for more.
