Sparrowhawk

We have no more of a photo of the sparrow hawk than we got of the woodpecker.

Mr B heard a kerfuffle in the wildlife zone over the fence and then a sparrow hawk flew up and sat a while in our apple tree where the birdfeeders hang.

Like the woodpecker it only visited once, and doesn't seem to have made any lasting discouragement on the sparrows - who are now eating through seed like it is going out of fashion. (Getting nice and fat........)

Another week has gone by and Mr B is thinking of changing his name to Trotters Independent Traders.... such has been his success in selling excess furniture, power tools and car accessories.

Gone is the old roof box, the big aluminium trunk that used to go on the back of the van, a table and chairs, some power tools, a fridge, a microwave, the 12 volt Esky, and my old cat box.

He has made more than it cost to buy me a new (second hand) trailer for the van.  Now F and I can go and collect seaweed, rotted stable manure, and straw for the allotment, and they have promised themselves a slap-up meal to celebrate the decluttering.  The way he has been going they might get two slap-up meals.  I might get more roast chicken.  (Chance would be a fine thing!)

Flowers in our front yard. There sees to be a colour theme going but the rain has not done them favours.

That there are any blooms at all in your yard speaks volumes for the mildness of the autumn we have had! I wonder if the Sparrohawk managed a mouse? Well done to the declutterers - and we look forward to tales of foraging from your trailer, Tigger dear! Hugs and whiskeries, YAM-aunty xxx

  3. We could always tell when Mrs Sparrowhawk had paid us a visit as she left us a pile of pigeon feathers by way of a greeting.

  7. I don't think I've ever seen a spare Hawk and I'm off to see if I can find a picture of one. We have several Hawks that come and visit and they too leave piles of feathers in the yard and in the pool. I am really impressed at all the selling going on and I'm sure that all the people are happy to get good Bargains On things they need and plus you might get some extra chicken

  9. I always thought Sparrowhawks were northerly hemisphere birds - they are occasionally mentioned on blogs from up your way - but after looking online I’ve discovered there is one found here, called ‘Collared Sparrowhawk’, it’s widespread, uncommon but not rare
