Guava


Most of us consume guava as juice (if we have tasted it at all).  The fruit is not really a juicy one so extracting its essence must take a lot of mashing and straining... and extracting of seeds which have the consistency of granite road-surfacing grit.

I have eaten them before but had forgotten about the stone chippings in them and can't think of any other fruit with quite such unforgiving seeds.

The scent of the fruit however is floral and magical and just two in the fruit bowl fills the entire apartment with sweet fruity floral perfume.  (A few mangosteen in there as well might help that air freshener effect.)

  1. How exotic. A native of central America and tastes like a cross between a pineapple and a strawberry and you can eat the seeds.

    1. You can swallow the seeds but they are unaffected by the digestion process. You certainly can't crunch the seeds without risking breaking your teeth.

  3. my grandmother made guava jelly, mama loved it, we did not. Mama used to pick them and then they made the jelly, also it was on sale in most of the roadside attractions back in the 50's, Guava Jelly every where. now i wonder if it is still made. be right back. I am surprised, all the stores i shop in, have it on the shelves, jelly or preserves. I wonder how i would feel about it now. Did not know about the sweet smell of it

    1. They are not unlike fejoas in some respects - easy to grow in the right places and then you have a glut of them and nobody wants to take the excess.

  5. I've had canned guava, sent from Zimbabwe long ago, and remember the odd texture of the fruit. Also the seeds, impossible to crack with teeth. It was interesting to experience.

    1. Ahhh so even canning doesn't do anything to the seeds, they really must be a by-product of a stone chipping industry.

  7. Oh I’d love to smell them. Yes only had them in juice. Usually combined with something else. Problem why they do that To make it go further
