Speaking of Gloopy Juice....

F arrived home from laiki with several kilograms of cheap tomatoes and set about making passata to seal into some jars. The bowl of green things in the background and below have various names (depending on where in the world you hail from). F calls them okra. When you cook okra, they make a gloopy juice too - more glue than juice in my view, but she eats it. In fact she seems to like them fried up with onions and lashings of Grenadan allspice, cooked down with a generous quantity of that passata she is making, and served on couscous with chopped up fermented lemons (Moroccan style). Do you think perhaps she is mixing her influences here? Fermented lemons (or possibly Fur-mented lemons, I have seen what grows on top) are in a 'crock' on the bench, and seem to be getting added to everything these days. They certainly ensure I don't go sniffing too closely at her plate. It smells like something she might clean the bathroom with. O...

Postcards - Borough Market & Nearby

Borough, the unremarkably named community on the southern end of the London Bridge, has a covered produce market with, apparently, rather ancient roots. It adjoins the grounds of Southwark Cathedral Southwark was traditionally a starting point for Christians making the pilgrimage to Thomas Becket's shrine in Canterbury, and it is pilgrims travelling from Southwark who are the subject of Chaucer's Canterbury Tales . These days the produce market is underneath an area where a load of railway lines converge on London Bridge Station. And so you get art installations like this ... on the brickworks that hold up the railway lines over the streets. Borough Market has reinvented itself in the last couple of decades and gone from a couple of fresh fruit and veg distributors who supplied commercial eateries, to an expanded area of vendors of food of all kinds and styles. Broomhandle

Football resumed with vigour on Saturday morning. Bang bang bang. Running feet. Screaming. Silence We peered off the balcony to see a half circle of concentrating youngsters watching the smallest one squeeze himself under a parked car. Their ball was stuck underneath. He got it out but it wasn't the only time or the only car it got stuck under. When she went to the laiki F took an old broomhandle and propped it on the wall telling them "You need that". They put it to good use but they still didn't invite F to be goalie. And would you blame them? Grandmas do gardening, not football. The 'I told you so' look. They put the broomhandle back when they finished for the day.

Goooooaaaaaawwwwll

Up the street and round the corner is a family (extended family or more than one family) living in a big old house. They are possibly of Romany culture, which tends to make them pariahs in a lot of communities despite the fact they speak the local language (Greek in this case). They appear to make their living recycling 'whiteware' - cleaning and fixing washing machines in particular, but fridges and stoves are also occasionally unloaded from the vehicles they use as transport - cars with back seats taken out for example. Those women work really hard unloading those heavy washing machines. The house they live in, like many around here, probably doesn't have a garden and the family often sits on the steps, watching the kids playing games in the street when we go past in the afternoons. Subterfuge

F thinks I don't know, but I do. I know everything. I saw the vet box come out. I don't go anywhere in the vet box anymore because I have Donkey and a backpack to ride in (or on), so I knew it wasn't for me. For the previous 3 or 4 days going and coming from work we had been met at the door by Mrs Calico. She had got a really sore mouth - cats know these things about each other. Hers was infected and smelled bad too, and she wanted to eat but she couldn't, so she was winding round and round F pleading for help. I didn't hiss at her. We have a pact - my human, but you can borrow her attention. Humans can be a bit slow. Mrs Calico's problem had been building up for a few weeks. She had been drooling in her food and eating really delicately and reluctantly. Off to the vet. That was last Thursday after work. An hour later they were back and F turned the spare bedroom into an infirmary. That only lasted about three hours. The 2 stabbings of anti-biotics and the pai...
