Blackbird Battles

Angel Mr T's backyard has become a war zone.  It is clearly 'des res' for blackbirds, and being territorial creatures the resident blackbird couple, aren't keen on sharing.

Every morning after bird food has been thrown out on the lawn and the feeders topped up, two Mr Blackbirds battle it out on the grass under the main bird feeder - the one the starlings mob.   There are chase scenes, lots of puffing and jumping, plenty of noise but no real damage.

Unfortunately as they both look the same to me I can't tell who is winning - resident Mr Blackbird or the interloper.

Mr B reports that later in the day the Mrs Blackbirds had also been seen exchanging views on boundaries.

Mr T had very strong opinions about blackbirds and had been terrorized by one all one summer (link here, and here).  It might have been his own fault as there used to be a huge prunus tree on our back boundary where, I suspect, the blackbirds nested.  He regularly scaled the fence and into that tree, so it is probably no surprise that the blackbird male would sit on the fence shouting at him whenever he made an appearance in the back yard.  Neighbours cut the tree down a few years ago which removed an aggravating source of invasive ivy, but was a shame for the skyline (and the blackbirds).

My uncle had a splendid orchard in Ashburton NZ which every year was a human/blackbird battleground. He said he wouldn't begrudge them the odd apple, pear or plum if they would eat the whole thing but the fact that they took a nip out of every single one was just plain wasteful.

Let's hope the successful pair in the territorial battles this year make their nest well out of the reach of  the various felines that saunter about the neighbourhood in 2024.

  1. How lovely to see Mr T again.
We now have regular Blackbird bunfights in our garden since the small birds have started to venture onto our property. The previous owners had three or four cats and it seems that scared away the birds. They are only now discovering that it is now a relatively safe place to come for dinner.

  3. It's worth having battling blackbirds in the garden for the pleasure of listening to their beautiful singing.

  4. Mr T was and is the only cat I have ever known that had a love affair with a wheel barrow. You already know how I feel about trees chopped down. I know the feeling your uncle had, because our Little Devils,, also known as squirrels, do the same with the avocados. a bite out of everyone they can reach.

  7. Hey Angel Tigger what a wonderful gardening assistant you were. It is a most impawtant job to make sure the humans stay on task no matter their chore.

Ohhhhhhhh Blackbirds...scare me. When I was a teenager the movie The Birds, by Alfred Hitchcock was a rage. OMCs my best friend and I went to see it. We were gripping the chair arms and actually ducking our heads while the flew around on the screen. The audio at the theater went off during a very tense moment. The man was hammering wood over his winds. All of a sudden somewhere behind, us a person decided to be the audio, we heard bang bang bang. It cracked up the entire theater.

  11. Mr T was truly an amazing feline. Definitely one of a kind
My cats will be sitting by the front door watching the world go by and they get attacked by the horrid miner birds that keep nesting under our eves.
Very determined they are. No matter how many time we pull out their nests they’re right back building them again.
And they refuse to pay any rent! How rude

  12. RIP Mr Angel T - he sure was a character. It's funny sometimes to look out my window and the bird antics.
