Lemons

Last Sunday the chap (groundsman/gardener) who brings his composting waste here for composting, dropped by with a huge bucket full of lemons.  (One of his clents had let them all drop on the ground and didn't want them.) I washed and sorted them.

Small ones for making preserved lemons.  Big ones for juicing.

What is your favorite lemon recipe that doesn't involve sugar?

Pickled Lemons

  1. I don’t have any recipes. They all have some sugar.
That’s a big bucket of lemons. They’re so expensive here to buy.

    1. I think they are expensive to buy here but it seems we know the right person for a regular supply.

  2. As Angela mentioned, they are getting expensive to buy. So we ‘cultivate’ friendships on the basis of lemon trees in the back garden……they tend to give them away at harvest time๐Ÿ˜Š

  3. I'm afraid all my lemon recipes involve sugar in some or other form. Would a drink of hot lemon, honey and whisky count?
    Cheers, Gail.

    1. It counts but we are doing cold lager this season. I am freezing juice in plastic egg trays, for adding to water bottles.

  4. Not a recipe, but Earl Grey with a slice of lemon, or gin and tonic, ditto - both very occasionally.

  5. That is one thing I miss...lemons you can pick when needed...and the municipal tree planting in Paeroa... grapefruit, the fallen ones so sweet!

  6. If we have three or four I slice them then freeze them so we have ready-iced lemon for our G&Ts ๐Ÿ˜

    1. Good idea but we aren't gin drinkers and I have about 100 lemons (that is a lot of garnished G&T)

  7. I love lemons and limes with Indian food. Especially starters.

  8. Just juicing and putting the freezer ready for the sugar syrup later to make lemonade. Or ice blocks. But how many of those do you want. We are still using lemon ice cubes from 2 years ago. They lose their strength though when frozen for a while

Sadly, other than lime which turns alkaline in the body rather than acid, I cannot take fresh citrus, particularly lemon. It's okay if made into curd or cooked into something, but that almost always involves sugar. Those pickly jars look very pretty though! YAM xx

  10. I have never eaten pickled lemons, but would drive to try them. I love lemons and slice them and eat them like an orange. my mouth is puckering thinking of how good these would taste. Florida has trees with lemons the size of grapefruit and wow do they taste good. I don't think I have ever eaten anything made with lemons and no sugar unless we count lemon juice squeezed on fish
