Lunch Box

Piwakawaka flit about dining on tiny flies caught on the wing.  At this time of year they follow humans about as we disturb sandflies in the grass and bracken when we walk. They jolly near get underfoot at times.

However it is not always all about what we disturb.  The wee fellas have worked out that they can urge the humans to open the compost bin, releasing a feast of tiny compost flies for their delectation.

Now dubbed 'the lunch box', the compost bin has acquired a patina of piwakawaka poop.

On more than one morning when we have been a little tardy with the start of day routine we have looked up from breakfast to see little piwakawaka sitting on a post between the cabin and caravan, staring in at us and clearly trying to attract attention.  Walk (by the path) round to open the lunch box and piwakawaka will have looped round the back and be sitting on the fence waiting for breakfast to be served.

Fresh is best.

  1. At first I thought they were like little squirrels but looked them up and found them to be birds. Better than the crow family that sit on the fence demanding food here.

  4. What pretty little birds they are, with their flirty tail fans. They do a good job, too (apart from getting under your feet!)
