Tuna (long finned eel) cleverly projected onto the pavement - don't step on it!
Weta (no English name that I know of) - normally about the size of an adult human hand - this one projected on a mossy embankment
Kereru (NZ native wood pigeon)
It's a bit cheeky posting lights for a Nature Friday post (and I have plenty of other nature candidates) but we went to a lights display at Pelorus Bridge/Te Hoiere* for Matariki two weeks ago and part of the event was a tour of the local program to protect the remaining local population of native long-tailed bats (pekapwka) and endeavour to restore them to a more healthy number.
I have no photos of bats. They are tiny and elusive. Protecting them involves trapping out rats, stoats and possums so I was interested in their levels of success and whether there was anything we could learn to use in our efforts to trap and reduce introduced-predators here in the bay.

Pekapeka - the New Zealand long-tailed bat

ReplyDeleteInteresting naming an eel as 'tuna'... I see it is a NZ endemic freshwater species. Love these light shows and they absolutely fit into Nature Friday! YAM xx
Tasty too (hot smoked)
DeleteI'd wonder more about how the tunafish got named with the Te Reo Māori name for an eel?
DeleteThe light show is impressive - more so in the flesh I would think.
ReplyDeleteThe bat is so tiny, fighting against the odds.
New Zealand's only native mammal.
DeleteThat's a brilliant light show. I love the way the eel seems to slither through the water.
ReplyDeleteThere are a lot of Place names that should be changed. I recognise Whakaari now, because of the tragedy.
Mauao as Mt Maunganui, don't know though if that just refers to the Mountain.
And I like the way they're pronounced properly on NZ news. Not butchered the way they were when I was growing up
I agree and decided it is time I signed up to learn Te reo Maori.
DeleteLovely light photos ~ Hugs ^_^

They are beautifully done..especially the tuna
DeleteI love the reflection videos and also like the two names thing. we should do that here in Florida. we do have many places named with native American names. My favorite is the first photo. I can see all kinds of things if I stare at it
