House Martins

There is a thick ugly power cable curving across the middle of the view from our balcony, but nothing is all bad and it has its advantages.  I have been trying to teach F the art of watching, really watching.  House Martins are a good exercise for her.

Their chattering in their nests under ledges in the garages above and behind our bedroom balcony door wakes us each morning.

They are the music that accompanies our daily lives at this time of year; when you can hear them over the traffic noise.

P.S. F says the House Martins were a band - well of course they are but I prefer cat music

  1. Love watching them swoop and fly. We had a couple investigating our eaves but they must have decided to nest elsewhere.

  2. Tell F the comments are taking up a lot of time. Comment said NZ state houses and I flipped out and found the most amazing houses, not just painted ones but really cool houses, time spent 5 minutes, i read here about the sound of house martins, i have not seen or heard them. time spent on Youtube while you blog sits here with no comments, 6 minutes. now it has taken me about 15 minutes to read your comment on my blog and on your blog... I learned a lot and will be checking out those state houses again. that is what they still do here, build public housing, suzidizced by govt all identical. not houses but apartments, flats, townhouses...

    1. F says SORRY. You are free to decide to ignore her. However we were unaware that US did government subsidized housing too (or is that done at state level?)

  3. they were a band - and they later became the Beautiful South - which seems appropriate.

  5. No house martins here for me to watch, but I find the welcome swallows fascinating as they dip and dive above my head - they sit on the power line but that is simply too high for me to jump so I have to just watch them and drool. Purrs, Mittens 😻

  6. F didn't know there were swallows in NZ. We looked them up and note their colouring is very like house martins. One day we saw a very optimistic cat leaping to try and catch low swooping martins. It was an agile cat but it didn't seem to have a snowball's chance of catching one. Xxx Mr T
