Maslow

Somewhere way, way, way back in my university days we had in some class or other been 'invited' to discuss Maslow's Heirarchy of Needs. I seem to recall it was a pyramid shape. The proposal is that this is how humans are motivated - physical needs first moving up through social and intellectual needs… There you go a nice internet image - with colour. One of my priorities here is to grow food. Food and shelter (physiological needs) are the first platform on Maslow's hierarchy of needs. Who would have thought at this stage of my life I would take myself back to square 1? The next layer is safety. OK I feel safe with where I'm at - no bears or tigers or war or tsunamis. There is no point feeling unsafe about earthquakes in these Shaky Isles - that way lies perpetual anxiety and descent into madness. If it shakes, it shakes. Social needs are a step higher again - belonging. The neighbours have been pretty good about inclusivity but I did have a moment of homesickness fo...

Alien Life Forms

Y'all gonna start thinkin I have a toadstool fixation. I'm beginning to suspect I do too. I don't often see red fungus - this on dead manuka. Cute VERY small ones Could be tiny hailstones but it really is fluffy mold or something. See the grains of sand in the soil? That hole is about 2mm across (6mm = 1/4 inch). (So it's much smaller that Tiger Beetle burrow.) The Yorkshire Pudding of Fungi (holds water; would probably hold gravy)… My all time favorite. What a colour! About 1cm (<1/2 inch) across. How cute is that? Again these are really small. They are almost an alien life form - or spilled brains in miniature. The green is probably also a mold or slime. Bottle cap shaped and sized. I love the way the light glows through these ones. You will have to expand this one to enjoy all the alien life forms collected into the scene.

Raid

Over the last few days I drove south, conducted a raid on my brothers containerload of nursery equipment and supplies, negotiated a deal with him on an old stainless steel bench that will go well in my (yet to be built) potting shed, dropped off some of his gear I had been using here and picked up an enormous bale of peastraw (that was a fund raiser for the Rakaia Rugby Club), dug out a couple of bits of furniture, and drove back. 4 days in total. Today I built a tiny polytunnel to put my seed trays in, protected a few plants from rabbit predation, played doinkball with Scully and sowed some flower seeds - calendula, eschscholzias, nasturtiums and tagetes. Tomorrow I have to go and pick up my water tank. I wonder when it will next rain… Murphy's Law says we will have a drought now.

Thank you everyone who commented on Scully and the Bulldog (W). Interestingly I never take Scully onto next door. She goes there with her owner (T) when T drops in for coffee and I have noticed then that although Scully dotes on the Ridgeback like he's a big brother, there is friction with the Bulldog. The friction is all Scully. The bulldog (bitch) is like the poor kid no one wants to play with. When we pass their gate on walks and I stop to pet the dogs, I make sure Scully behaves while I give attention through the gate to W. They aren't the best of friends but there is no aggro. W is very sweet natured but as Mr B pointed out, it takes a bulldog fan to love that face and the image the whole physique conveys and to perpetuate all the health problems that go with the breed. W seems to have more than her share. There are the breathing issues (which come with most of that breed), that terribly overshot bottom jaw which needed teeth removed, she has had a series of tumours rem...

Kindling

Tuesday was sunny but kind of marred (or made real depending on your life philosophy) by a small sadness. Scully was unusually jumpy when she turned up. The noises that go with washing pots and cutlery in a stainless steel sink had her constantly startling and looking ready to run or fight. Never-the-less we had our usual walk and I set about the next task I'd set myself. I gave Scully a beefbone to keep her occupied while I worked and the neighbours had gone out leaving their own two dogs (a big soft Rhodesian Ridgeback and a small soft Bulldog) with the gated run of their own place. We talk to their dogs over (or through) the fence when we go past and Scully dotes on Nela the Ridgeback. Neighbours came back and opened their gates while Scully was crunching on her bone a good 50metres (and out of site behind buildings and caravan) away but suddenly Scully decided the Bulldog was a threat to her bone and raced next door and snapped at the Bulldog.
