Anti-Scurvey League

My sister visited and gifted us a bag of limes

Three days later a neighbour called by bearing grapefruit
We already had oranges and satuma mandarins

Yesterday a different neighbour dropped in with a bag of lemons

and more limes (!)

That would once have been a sign from the universe to make lime marmalade but with sugar now being a banned substance at this address marmalade is a non-starter.

Rum and lime juice.
Thai curries with lashings of lime.

Maybe I should attempt some hot lime pickles...

  1. the only bad thing about fruit of all kinds is the fact it all comes at the same time. I mean how much fruit can 2 people eat? this is wonderful. we used to give our grapefruit away to anyone who would take it and the avocados also, now the grapefruit tree died and the avocados doesn't bear fruit, only a few ugly ones. drought is horrible

    1. Shame about the grapefruit tree but I have learned grapefruit interferes with the body's processing of lots of medications. I know what you mean about gluts - growing vegetables is the same.

    1. Apparently brocoli has more Vit C. We eat lots of that too.

  4. Marmalade was exactly what I thought. But you can't have it sugar free. Make a couple of jars for yours and Scullies morning toast and hide it.
    Otherwise, squeeze and freeze.
Citrus ice cubes always come in handy
It's a wonderful variety. Lucky you

    1. We squeeze and freeze (or slice and freeze) lemons. Limes will just have to be fermented into pickles.

Are you prepared to use xylitol or similar? This sugar-free marmalade recipe may be of interest. (Xylitol is a natural sugar alcohol with the same sweetness as table sugar but 40% fewer calories plus a very low glycemic index, so diabetes-friendly.) I can also recommend this nimbu ka achaar recipe (lime pickle)... YAM xx

    1. Lime pickle has been agreed to be the preferred option here - thank you for the recommended recipe. I looks relatively easy to do once the nevessary ingredients have been assembled. I need to get some hing. There is an Indian food shop beside the pilates studio in Nelson and I regularly shop there. They will suret stock it.

    2. PS - as an aside i understand xylitol (birch sugar) is toxic to dogs... Anyhow I tried using some in UK where it is more readily obtainable but Mr B is a sugar addict not a sweetness addict so it didn't really help.

  6. How wonderful you have such lovely neighbours.
Unfortunately now you have to decide what to do with it all.
I’ve heard of preserved lemons. I think it’s a Middle Eastern dish
Maybe you could even do it with the limes.
