Data (as in the ethereal thing we use to communicate these days) is in limited supply to me at present. I need to upgrade my phone contract - an expensive part of life in this country. Once a week I go into Havelock and buy myself a night in the camping ground - do my laundry, empty the chemical toilet, have two hot showers, and use their WiFi. This week I also drove down to Blenheim before slogging back to my outback project and treated myself to a new pair of boots and a small peanut chocolate bar, a visit to a super supermarket, a gas bottle refill, and a coffee in a real cafe. And I visited the offices of 1. the Marlborough District Council building inspectors, 2. A geo-engineering business, and 3. An earth moving business that installs septic tank sewage systems. Nature Friday

Chestnut season here. On Monday I was camped in the shade of, but not under, a spreading chestnut tree. Horse chestnuts. I find their brown shinyness and delicate swirling patterns irresistable. Eyeballs Almost a sinister glare

Good Neighbours

Great neighbours in fact. When we use the term 'salt of the earth' some interpreters of the message downgrade it to 'red neck' or 'common'. Such neighbours are sadly uncommon and built of the earth's rarest metals. Yesterday Mrs N(neighbour) gave me a 2 litre ice cream pack of field mushrooms picked from her uncle's farm. They have offered me the use of their shower. They feed me cold drinks with real ice at the end of most days. I am in return providing little except being the guinea pig (or neagui pig as my young Afghan friend would have it) in the 'jumping through hoops' process on the way to building. Their place has only a garage so they are currently living in that. At least they have a fridge and a shower. Oh yeah and I also treated myself to a new hat when I was in town. The old one was getting a bit shapeless. Selfies really aren't my forte. PS - planning glitch has been resolved in my favour. How's that for speed and efficie...

Odds n Sods

Fog in the valleys when I drove to Nelson early on Thursday. A sawmiller in Richmond (near Nelson) has added value to his product by creating kitset cabins. His photo not mine. I have decided to buy one and live in it until we get the house built. We were going to build a separate guesthouse eventually anyway - so plans change and I'm building the guesthouse first. It was a serendipitous day. I stopped for coffee at the first cafe sign in Richmond (in order to call the bloke before turning up on site) and the cafe just happened to be in a business that sells bbqs and log burners. Only the day before the architect had asked what fireplace I wanted. And now I know... That was easy. I like showrooms. So much nicer, and easier for decision-making, than looking at pictures on a website. I've touched it; sized it up, imagined it in my lounge. Enough house stuff... here are a few photos I've collected over the last 2 or 3 weeks and can't make into a blog post on their own. ...

On a Monday

It's a working from home day today. F is looking a bit harassed again, so I have stayed out of her way. Our dining room table looks like an unnatural disaster - paper, sewing, bike parts, a paint brush, coffee cups and empty food bowls....and the computer and phones and wires and all that stuff. Someone upstairs has their TV turned WAY up and we can hear what sounds like the music on kids TV programmes. One of F's colleagues had to be taken into hospital today - she had been complaining of backache at work last week and this morning was on her way to hospital immediately she got up from her bed. Now she is on intravenous antibiotics. It's kind of scary how a fit healthy person can suddenly fall off their perch - she was meant to be running a marathon in Edinburgh this coming weekend. The poor girl will, once she gets over the shock of being so seriously ill, be lamenting months of wasted training. What a downer! We are grateful for good health, p...
