Rat - Update.

Mr (or Mrs) Rat overstepped the boundaries on Thursday night. He (or she) found a way into the under-sink cupboard via the hole that brings the water pipes into the house. We think it might have been first incursion as there is no evidence of having used the place as a toilet and there is not scent of rodent under the cupboards. My third trip into town on Saturday was to buy some instant contact wood glue and some expanding foam. Having pulled out the boards under the cupboards I discovered that the floor doesn't quite meet the walls over a distance of a couple of feet, and in addition to the gap around the water pipes, some idiot installed the main stopcock for water into the house right IN the floor level. It has a huge U shaped piece cut out of the floor so that you can turn the lever. They might as well have put a sign on it " Rodent entry this way➡ ". I have to build a box to go around it, as well as squirting expanding foam into the gaps either side of it. Hav

Philosophy (Earth Day)

Question: "If a tree falls in a forest and no one is around to hear it, does it make a sound?" Wild Garlic Dreaded Spanish Bluebells: I have been fighting a 15 year war on these - to little avail Sweet Cicely Answer: The idea is that it doesn’t make a sound, because “sound” requires a “listener” to hear it, otherwise it’s just air pressure waves. So it’s the idea that unless there is a conscious being to perceive it, it does not make a “sound”. May flowers (or Hawthorn) Plantain - of of my favorite 'weeds'. I just love this plant and have been cultivating them in my garden. It turns out that they have a beneficial mycorrhizal root association with strawberries. (Bonus)

Graft

Mr B was working over the weekend, and the cycle ride-out I wanted to join was booked up before I even saw the invitation, so I decided to graft instead and was blessed with a couple of days of sunshine. I don't remember a mere 2 days of grafting being such hard work, and it isn't like I was actually digging for 8 hours solid each day. No - I merely cleared out the side cupboards upstairs (we have sloping ceilings and side lofts), gave away 4 dozen empty half-pound honey jars, left over from our beekeeping days, and dragged a couple of bags of other oddments off to a charity shop (or two). While in town dropping rather than shopping, I consulted a locksmith about getting a replacement key for our china cabinet. Huey (my father's mythical mover of things that disappear right under your nose), played a blinder on us when we left Greece. The china cabinet has three locking doors - ordinary bureau locks - and the key (only key) was made visible to all by an enormous bright b

Chocolate Mudcake

No 38 - Mudcake While I was as University I worked nearly full time 5 nights a week in a local restaurant. The owners were head cook and maitre d' together and ran one of the most 'hip' restaurants in town. They eschewed formal 'cheffing' qualifications and pulled together everyday dishes from a wide range of cultures and countries where they had travelled. Dishes on the black board menu hailed from around the Mediterranean, Middle East, North and West Africa, Mexico, Indonesia & Japan - and anything else that was tasty, unfussy, fresh & personal. Daily changes in the blackboard menu reflected that which was seasonally available and as much as possible was purchased from local producers. Ferry Boat

The Ferry Boat is an inn situated on the Western most point of Hayling Island - where the ferry crosses the Langstone Harbour entrance to Eastney (Portsmouth and Southsea). Late one Saturday afternoon (just after the clocks got their Spring move forward), I suggested to Mr B that we pack up whatever it was we had been doing that day and go somewhere 'for a beer'. We don't have 'a local' and tend to spread our patronage around a bit. The last time we went to the Ferry Boat was years ago and I was put off by the poor quality of the meals (micro-waved TV dinners essentially - no one goes out to eat those), so we haven't been there for years. Candidates for a late afternoon social drink at this time of year must, in my view, have a good view of a sunset. That cuts it down to the Red Lion at Chalton (perfect sunset over the Downs), The Ship at Langstone (sunset over Langstone Harbour), or - now that I came to think about it - The Ferry Boat (with a sunset over S
