Rubus cissoides Looks innocuous enough until it has you in its clutches. Escaping its grip without paying with your skin (or shirt) is virtually impossible. Related to blackberries but nastier <!-- end LinkyTools script --

Yams

...or Oca if you know them by that name One root dug up earlier this week. A South American vegetable that for all of my life has been a winter staple in NZ. I've been told (but can't verify) that NZ is the only country in the world where it is grown as a commercial crop. Mine aren't as big as you could buy 'em in supermarkets but that's not too shabby. Mr B has had to learn to embrace their acidity and sweetness; we have bucket-loads. Best roasted but acceptable fried/sautéed in butter, especially with some fresh grated ginger.

Magic

Linda Sue (of Lady Margaret's Curlers ) asked whether I had any magic recipe that made rhubarb palatable without life-endangering quantities of sugar (not quite her words but the same general gist). In response, I have 3 (or 4) suggestions: 1. Banana. Years ago I found a recipe for rhubarb pie using banana and some grated orange zest instead of sugar. It works for us. Raisins are another source of natural unrefined sugars. 2. Before Europe had sugar, rhubarb was cooked up with herb Sweet Cicely (Myrrhis odorata). Sweet Cicely is nice to chew on even if you don't stew it into your rhubarb. 3. Embrace acidity. 4. Grow low acid varieties of rhubarb. We seem to have stumbled on one here - Ruby Tart. *

Morgan's Orchard

Narna, my paternal grandmother, taught me to play cribbage while I was still quite young. If nothing else it made me practice adding up skills. Morgan's Orchard was a hand that contained a single pair. My feijoa crop: The olive crop... Rhubarb is being more productive

Zooming

Spider webs Zooming in you see the spider webs on the top left of the centre distance tea-tree. They caught my eye with sun shining on their dewi-ness like Xmas tree sparkles. No frost here yet but mornings are getting a bit chilly. I harvested my last zucchini a day or two ago and pulled the plants even though they were still making fresh new growth (but no flowers). Besides I needed their bit of garden to be reshaped as part of a drainage plan. I'm trying to redirect the run-off rainwater that comes sheeting down from the properties above us in heavy rain storms. We get three or four a year such events that threaten inundation. Inundation might be an exaggeration - the water continues downhill - I just hate slopping around in ankle deep water where it pools in my paths and parking places en route. Topsoil was dug out of the nacsent driveway so that some hardfill could be laid to reduce risk of trucks getting stuck. I'm slowly moving about 6 cubic metres of soil...
