My phone has done a lousy job of recording this - the pine pollen lining the puddles is on reality bright sulphurous yellow. There's a hint of yellow in the close-up of Scully. On a couple of days last week dense yellow fog rolled up the slopes of the pine plantation at the top of valley which forms our inlet or bay. It was fleeting, dispersing on wafts of breeze, and I didn't have a camera about me on either time that I saw it. Given the photographic record above I doubt I would have captured the yellow anyway and it would have looked like just another wisp of cloud lurking in alcoves of the hills. Pollen has, however, settled on everything and a light rain one evening washed it into puddles, into streaks on windows, collected it at the drip line of shed roofs, on windowsills and ledges, and the bottom of downpipes Pine plantations are big business in this region so there's a lot of pollen. I'm told that Marlborough has a second 'pollen event' when the grapes...

Ube powder When I was working in Singapore I bought some fancy bread that had purple filling. I did ask "what's that? before purchase. The answer was "Purple Yam". Sadly it didn't taste of anything startling really, but the purple was intense - and different. Scouring the Philippino food shop in Ashburton one day I came across Purple Yam (Ube to give it its native name) powder and bought some. Only then did I research recipes. It seems to be used in cake, biscuits, desserts and confectionary.- loaded up with sugar. I have been using it a tablespoon at a time when I want diversity in my breakfast porridge. This week I decided to use some to make yam jam - Ube Halaya. Recipes abound on t'internet. Mine ended up too wet and didn't set nicely but was perfectly edible as a thick dessert soup. The problem was as my first experience no particular taste I could attribute to yam - the dessert tasted of sweetened condensed milk and coconut milk. It was however ...

Baking Repost - Savory Muffins

Savory Muffins At this time of year we spend our Sunday's yacht racing. I love sailing but it does sometimes make the weekends seem to short. Sailing on Sunday, and 5 days of work in London, leaves only Saturday for everything else in life..... including the baking. The allotment has very nearly been cleaned up - frost took all the pumpkins and courgettes a week ago. The corn and beans are all harvested. Only the bassica bed looks well stocked for Winter - that and some Swiss Chard (called Silver Beet where I come from) - nothing much there I can turn into baking (cabbage cake ....hmmmmmm .... although I have to say as an aside that kale in curry sauce - an accidental combination - wasn't as objectionable as might be anticipated). We spent part of Saturday putting guttering on the shed so that we could collect rainwater for summer watering. It felt like a mad project given that it has rained solidly for a week and the garden is completely ...
