The Saga Continues

Sunday dawned sunny and bright. The pile of anti-rodent preparations in the kitchen glared at me so I went and sat outside to watch the bird life and drink coffee. Some patchwork trimming, four loads of laundry and a supermarket trip later No I am not procrastinating Much Mr B rang to say he had invited one of his clients to dine with us that evening. Oh crikey - all evidence of rat defence program was swept under the cupboards and kick boards pushed back into place. Sewing was cleared off the dining room table. The pile of 'this must leave the house' sitting in the entrance way was shoved unceremoniously into my office (shame it doesn't have a door!). The lounge got a lick and polish - cushions plumped, blankets arranged on chairs. Floors got swept and obvious dust on windowsills got a sort of lazy swish with my elbow as I raced past putting the loads of laundry away. Second phone call: "I've invited him to stay the night." Service

Note left under the bowls.... Dear Hoomans Service standards in this diner have dropped off a cliff. It's 2030 hours and I've been waiting ages to have my order taken. I have to say I prefer the 'all you can eat' buffet laid out, awaiting my arrival, to this a la carte business. However, now that you are here taking orders, I'll have everything on the menu. Furthermore, while you're here I'd like to mention that the toilets need upgrading and may I suggest you employ more diligent cleaners - the current standard of facilities is unhealthy. OK OK I know that some of my fellow diners have regrettably poor control of their bowel movements, and others may simply be sociopathic filth but you can't expect your diner to get great reviews if you can't stay on top of the mess, and the health inspectors would have a field day. Rat - Update.

Mr (or Mrs) Rat overstepped the boundaries on Thursday night. He (or she) found a way into the under-sink cupboard via the hole that brings the water pipes into the house. We think it might have been first incursion as there is no evidence of having used the place as a toilet and there is not scent of rodent under the cupboards. My third trip into town on Saturday was to buy some instant contact wood glue and some expanding foam. Having pulled out the boards under the cupboards I discovered that the floor doesn't quite meet the walls over a distance of a couple of feet, and in addition to the gap around the water pipes, some idiot installed the main stopcock for water into the house right IN the floor level. It has a huge U shaped piece cut out of the floor so that you can turn the lever. They might as well have put a sign on it " Rodent entry this way➡ ". I have to build a box to go around it, as well as squirting expanding foam into the gaps either side of it. Hav

Graft

Mr B was working over the weekend, and the cycle ride-out I wanted to join was booked up before I even saw the invitation, so I decided to graft instead and was blessed with a couple of days of sunshine. I don't remember a mere 2 days of grafting being such hard work, and it isn't like I was actually digging for 8 hours solid each day. No - I merely cleared out the side cupboards upstairs (we have sloping ceilings and side lofts), gave away 4 dozen empty half-pound honey jars, left over from our beekeeping days, and dragged a couple of bags of other oddments off to a charity shop (or two). While in town dropping rather than shopping, I consulted a locksmith about getting a replacement key for our china cabinet. Huey (my father's mythical mover of things that disappear right under your nose), played a blinder on us when we left Greece. The china cabinet has three locking doors - ordinary bureau locks - and the key (only key) was made visible to all by an enormous bright b

Out of the Freezer

It has started to become glaringly obvious to me that the contents of the large freezer in our garage might be in excess of our nutritional requirements over the next 4 or 5 months. Time, therefore, to get serious about basing all meals on something that has been stashed in the freezer. The small truckload of greens for instance (nettles and spinach from last spring and summer) that was being added gradually to polenta and orzotto/rizotto, has come under scrutiny and hortopita has been order of the day twice in recent weeks. I can't get 'village' phyllo here in UK so took a leaf out of the book of Angela and used the pastry available (in our case flakey pastry) - not the same texture at all but works ok as a pie. The muffins in this case might have been rhubarb and something. That's another stock of something for which the new season, fresh kind is nearly ready.
