From " Winnie-the-Pooh: IX In Which Piglet is Entirely Surrounded by Water" Fortunately the soul is so free-draining that this was gone within a hour or two of the rain stopping. Unfortunayely while it continued to rain our land is the recipient of the directed run-off of 4 sections above us - each in turn redirecting water flowing on to theirs from above until it is a single large stream pouring straight through our boundary. 326mm (about 11 inches) fell over 2 days. It was more or less stopped by 0600 on Saturday morning when we were due to set off to Nelson for my last day of in-house Pilates teaching training. However State Highway 6 (to Nelson) was closed between Havelock and Pelorus Bridge and had been since 1900 the previous evening. Some of ...

AWOL

Teaming. Second day indoors. Take the opportunity to catch up on some blogging. 180 (or so) mm of rain by this morning and the rain gauge is steadily filling again. The road is closed by a combination of rain and high tide. Things seemed to be moving along very slowly this time last year but by comparison with this year it was positively sprinting. We wait. While builders and surveyors were out here last month we decided to move the house site about 2 metres towards the sea. It makes a difference to the height of foundations on the seaward end and gives us more space to built a sauna and bath-house between the house and the cabin. The move needs, however, further approval from the building inspectors. They are taking their time. I'm ready for a change. While we wait Mr B has been collecting toys.... ...we have been clearing tall gorse....(and making a firewood pile)... ...taken a trip to Rarangi (a beach settlement east of Blenheim) where we bought pe...

Ate a Bad Oyster

Isn't that what humans say when there is no other explanation for food refusing to stay down? It started on Sunday morning and lasted about 24 hours, but I'm feeling better now thank you for asking. I have some even newer food for sensitive tummies (the other new food, expensive stuff, was labelled grain free, no colouring, no preservatives etc etc etc, and it might not have been the food, but I don't want to eat it now having recycled a couple of different flavours of it.) F is on holiday this week so I have an attentive nurse. Not that Mr B isn't attentive but he whisks me off to V-E-T and I get jabbed. I heard them discussing it on Monday but fortunately my rumbly tummy settled down, and there were no more surprises under the bedroom chair. Mr B is doing stuff under the sink again but I'm not supervising. It is cold out and in my invalid state I have been permitted to hug a nice warm radiator and have found that preferable to hanging out under a sink inspecting l...

Woodpecker

Friday mornings calm contemplation of my breakfast was rudely interupted by F getting all excited about a woodpecker on the bird feeder. By the time she had worked out how to use the camera on her new work phone (first thing to hand) the woodpecker had become aware of the attention and did a flit. Greater Spotted. I will let her put a borrowed pic at the end of the post. It took a few days to get the birdies to trust the birdfeeder and so far it has been only sparrows and blue tits that will use it. In fact we have 10 bird feeders with a range of contents: a couple of seed feeders, a tray of fat pellets for robins, and a small do-dacky of meal worms (it's a fine mash tray with a little roof over it that only small birds could fit into. The magpies steal the mealworms and they have voracious appetites). There is a nigella seed feeder (not yet deployed), a tray of peanuts in a squirrel proof cage, and 4 suet ball feeders. Chaffinch. We just saw a chaffinch....

Nature Friday

Found growing in our O Regano pot this week. No one touched it, licked it, ate it and it was gone again a couple of days later. Well more to the point it was a dried up husk that no one is going to lick. My office desk bunk has arrived home. I have retired from office work (as of last Thursday). I babysit Mr B now. He suggested I donate the bunk to the cousins downstairs. Some of them camp out in our garage space in the winter time. I'll think about it. It isn't my favorite bed to sleep in and I have 5 others. Is that excessive?
