More Hats - Saturday Stitches

Strawberry hat finishedStrawberry hat finished. Followed by a chullo in recycled homespun, home dyed. It needs a jolly good pressing. Lastly a 'skating' hat - knitted flat - Then joined up in an interesting and convoluted way to become this I finished the knitting without enough yarn for the cast-off row so I'll unpick the cast-on edge (which is jolly untidy anyway) and use it to graft the two edges together.

Inedible

Step-nephew's wife asked for a strawberry hat for their child. Why do people want to wear stuff that looks like food? Work in progress. One of my fellow Pilates apprentices grows flowers. She gave me a gorgeous bunch of rununculus and freesias - gorgeous scent - on one of my trips to Nelson. They are nearly two weeks in the vase now. How good is that? Pumpkin colours. It's nearly Halloween season in cultures that make a thing of it these days - All Hallows Evening. It is followed by All Saints and on the third evening (because trinity seems to be a theme in Christian spirituality), All Souls. I was reminded of this early today while cutting up my second last pumpkin of our last Autumn Bright orange. Sweet. Luscious. Easily my favorite cooked vegetable. I snack on cooked pumpkin. Strange woman. I have frozen some to deal with pumpkin-snack-withdrawal season (known to the rest of the world as 'summer'). Chilled mashed pumpkin.... Roofing contracto...

Wriggly Tin

JayCee, blogger on Isle of Man, asked in her comment on my last post whether that wriggly tin was the final layer on the roof. People in UK and Europe are accustomed to roofs being tiled. In case you didn't see my reply, and were, yourself, wondering about our corrugated iron roof here is my reply: "The wriggly tin* is indeed the roof. The wall cladding is also wriggly tin - same colour. Corrugated iron is a traditional colonial building material out here and this (scoria) the closest colour I could get to old railway goods-sheds. The paint for railway goods-sheds must have fallen off a lot of trucks in the past because tin barns across the countryside bear fading evidence of the colour." This one locally is on the interestingly named "Dog Point Road". Here's my actual inspiration for my choice of colour: Cottage at Stavely (Mid-Canterbury) ...and more examples of its use (new and old) this one is a relocatable cottage built in Christchurch barn beside State...

Bottom Up

From yesterday's comments I see that our house construction methods are a novelty in some other parts of the world. Designing a house here comes with options. From the bottom up - the foundations - one could choose a number of options from piles, poles, concrete slab, to rib-raft (and stuff in between). Our house is on a rib-raft; a design developed/ improved and more widely adopted after the 2011 earthquake in Christchurch. It's 400mm (about 16 inches) of polystyrene and reinforcing steel (sitting on 700mm of compacted hard-fill) and encased in concrete. We also have pipework in there for underfloor heating. On top of that rib-raft wooden frames go up for the walls. They are from 90mm to 140mm thick depending on how much insulation you want. Ours are 90mm. Wooden roof trusses span the tops of the walls. We might have gone for an open raftered ceiling but the engineering involved for our design made the cost prohibitive (and the rooms would have been more difficult to ...
