Wild Cattle

Yesterday we contributed to island economy by attending a 'flower show' and craft stalls event with 'food stalls' that turned out to be a sausage sizzle and some iced biscuits. I'm not talking it down - I remember events like this in the village hall of our youth (Morven in South Canterbury): displays of garden produce, flower arrangements, baking and preserves, artwork, and various textile crafts like knitting and sewing. With a total island population of around 600 (and taking into account a generational move away from handcrafted clothing, or gentle arts like flower arranging) the diversity of entries is perhaps not as great as we drew to the village hall in Morven in the 1960s. Community events like that are as important for the gathering and contact as they are for the displays themselves. Our host invited us. Gorse Knife

Old fashioned but effective. Runs on porridge. No high tech circuitry. One power setting. Can be serviced with a file (no fancy tool kit required). And takes up virtually no space in the shed. Bracken: No bracken: Pile of bracken (and blackberry and gorse): I'm covered in rusty brown dust (which I guess is bracken spores) made into brown glue by sunscreen and sweat. That dust doesn't half make me cough. The supervisor declines to keep the coffee cup topped up but has been pointing out where the sticks are still a bit long. We'll go out on the water later. It's a calm hot day that started as a calm overcast day, Mr B has gone fishing, and kayaking is just calling out to us again (like the loud ratcheting of the cicadas). oh and by the way - here is how El Greco is doing on its first year in the garden

Pink

F's bro came to visit a couple of weeks back and brought with him my new BFF - Wee Jock. It took us a while to size each other up (same size) and we were each protective of our respective homes on wheels and the area around them, but by the time he left we were playing chasing and I was showing him the best places to find rabbits and possums. In fact F took us for walks and although he looks like a sop, Wee Jock was doing more hunting in the bushes than I was. (I come back when F whistled, Wee Jock pushed the boundaries!) Here he is demonstrating how to get dry after swimming I went swimming in the sea yesterday and it turned me pink. F made me fetch my 'puppy' from the fresh-water pond a few times to make me white again but the top of my head stayed pink. Algae? F wonders if it might be the same zoo plankton that glows in the dark in our bay at present. She has been going kayaking in the dark (without me - I'm all tucked up in bed with my Mum by then) just to enjoy th...
