Scully here - reporting on waterborne expeditions. They aren't as good as going for long walks but I refuse to be left behind; even if it does mean I have to wear that red coat. I lean on F's legs. She makes noises about cutting off blood supply but I reckon I'm protecting her from frostbite in her feet. We had Spring tides last week (extra high and extra low - they come around about once a month all year - not just Spring). The other kind are called Neaps. F told me all this while we were negotiating flooded reed beds. (She also mentioned something called neeps - which humans apparently eat with tatties - and advised "nothing at all to do with tides". You guys have a strange language.) High Spring tide meant we could paddle all the way to the culvert at the top of the bay. 'Tisn't 'notter Redundant telephone poles. A silted up old oyster farm. You can actually see the high water mark about 450mm (18 inches) further up some of those reeds. We told ...

The Library.

Two days after returning from Chatham Islands I started training to become a teacher of Pilates. The course is run through a studio in Nelson, so I drive my rattly old van over the hilly and winding State Highway 6 through Rai Valley to Nelson (and back) one day a week. The cost of fuel jumped about 30% this week - not surprising but hard on folks on a tighter budget than mine. Even so we have axed going to Blenheim once a week for supplies and laundry services and I have to fit all that into my day in Nelson. Mr B is tired of the rattly old van, and our 20km of gravel road is 20km of corrugations at present - which is a rough ride when the front seat is on top of the front wheels - so he has ordered and I've paid the deposit on a new 'Ute'. More on that next month. He wouldn't settle for boxed-standard white so he has to wait for a copper coloured one! Holding the World in Place (Eulogy)

Tigger held our world in place. We used to chuckle about the 'you may kiss my paw' pose he favoured when relaxing. He held the garage window in place while he slept on the workbench. He held the cover on the airbag if riding in the front seat of the van (F did used to wonder if this would kill them both). He held down arms, and legs, corners of blankets, newspapers, pieces of sewing, floor mats. He would lie on one thing and extend an arm (usually his right) and hold down something else. He held our hearts. We are bereft. So is everyone who loses a member of their family. What can I say about Tigger to those who knew him only in late life? Tigger was the gentlest of souls, calm, possibly a very zen Buddist, but never timid. He never fought but he never ran away either. On the occasions we did see confrontation he seemed to be calmly encouraging the other away; maybe he had total trust that his 'army' was there to back him up. Christmas Lights on our Street this Year

We haven't had municipal Christmas lights on ur street before this year. Well not while we have been here anyway. It's our third Christmas in Piraeus. We went out to strolling under the lights (taking exercise, with a pet, permit 6) F and Mr B take a coffee cup and a spoon each, and put me in the backpack, and we go and get ice cream at a parlour along the street. I'm no fan of ice cream but I like sitting on the beach while they stuff their faces with it. The girl in the shop knows us now - I guess not many people bring their own bowl and spoon, and a cat in a backpack, when they come out for ice cream after dark in the middle of December.

Nature Friday- Webs

On a misty morning the webs had collected droplets of dew. As I write this we have had 45 hours or relentless rain. It has over-topped the rain gauge 2 mornings in a row (rain gauge is 200mm - 8 inches) and I'm getting worn down by the audio assault of water hitting the aluminium tin can in which I dwell. My land is between 2 and 4 inches deep in water running off the hillsides above me and the electricity has gone off. Scully turned up sometime yesterday and I didn't hear her imprecations to be let in over the drumming of rain on metal. (She whimpers - doesn't bark.) I only discovered her hiding under the caravan when I opened the door to retrieve a bucket. We need a break and this is forecast to go on through tomorrow. src="
