At the halfway point of bike wrecking, my carefully composed installation has become a visitor attraction with tourists photographing and discussing it's contribution to the expressive art world. What I need is a grandiose statement about what inspired it, it's meaning, and my reasons for choosing this form and materials - what it all represents - and I shall submit it for exhibition at the next Venice Biennale. What it really represents is a pile of wrecked bikes, the stupidity of some bike builders in fitting rubbish components to very good frames, the idiocy of others manufacturing frames so heavy that riding them must have been like pedalling a tank. It also represents built-in obsolescence; little parts that break but are no longer obtainable (and while we might fabricate or find a work around, the work involved is worth more than the bike). Fresh Snow on Mt Hutt

Not the best photo. I should have done better on such a clear bright day. My excuse is that despite the sunshine, the wind coming off that snow was chilling (and I had been biking into it, loaded with groceries). The truth is I wasn't wearing my reading glasses so had no idea of the (lack of) quality until much later. Mt Hutt, about 15 miles away, has a ski field. There have been years when skiing continued into December; 2024 might be one of them! We are having a La Niña season, which for us means cooler temperatures. The nights are near to freezing still, but it was probably the reason the rhododendrons had such a spectacular flowering this season this year. Hopefully La Niña will also reduce the risk of a long and stressful fire season.

Pukeko

Pukeko,or swamp hen, is one of NZ's more colourful birds in every sense of the word. They are not shy or reclusive. They love farmland and forgive human intervention. They are out and about in daylight and we love their antics. You might have spotted something unnatural under the Chatham Island lily yesterday. Meet Graham ...the pukeko.

Beau

Met at Argyle Park a few days ago - this is WFT Beau. Beau wouldn't look at the camera and when I got down to his level he kept trying to kiss it. Like a certain other WFT I know, Beau is a ditch diver so his Humum keeps his furs cut short all over. You might be able to observe that Beau had just emerged from Mill Creek. He sought (and got) lots of scritches. His bodyguard wanted in on the act... ...softer than butter and absolutely adorable but big and heavy and solid; an irresistible force when he leans on you.

Nature Friday

This week, some of New Zealand's unusual flora for your entertainment Chatham Islands Lily Ti kouka - Cabbage Trees - (Cordyline australis) Ti kouka flowers have heady scent, sweet, rich, enticing and redolent of summer and warmth. Wharariki - Mountain Flax - (Phormium cookianum) Wharariki flowers Whatariki flowers close up. The honey bees love them Wharariki and it's relation harakeke are prized in Maori culture as a weaving plant. Their fibres are so linen-like that European settlers called the plant flax. It is in fact a lily.
