More Pork and Goldfinches

You might need to turn the volume up. That is a Ruru. It's name means watchful guardian. You are forgiven for hearing, if you conduct your lives in English and pig meat is not haram for you, that the bird is insisting on being served More Pork. Morepork is what the (English speaking) European settlers named this wee owl. Cute huh? Photo borrowed from Forest Bridge Trust Arriving back on Tuesday from my weekly jaunt to Havelock I was greeted by the sight of a flock of dozens of goldfinches feeding on hawkbit seedheads on my plot. Pretty flashes of yellow and red which you won't see in this video.

Constructive Use of Time

One dared not mope about looking bored, or horror of horrors mention being bored anywhere within sight or earshot of my mother. One would immediately be instructed to find something constructive to do - or mother would find it for you. Constructive in her dictionary usually meant waxing and polishing the kitchen linoleum. If you had made the fatal mistake it paid to suddenly remember there was something you were meant to be doing in the workshop or sorting the scrap pile behind the smithy or staring at the pigs - something, anything, but the kitchen floor. I don't recall my brother ever having to polish the linoleum. Maybe he had to clean the car. It rained quite effectively for most of last Friday. The kids next door put on their rugby gear and went out and practiced sliding about on wet muddy grass for a couple of hours. 2 girls. Oh the joy of having hot showers and a laundry to go back indoors to - even a shed to hang the dripping clothes in would help. Like an old fuddy duddy ...

Silbury Hillet and a Long Barrow

Having completed moving my nascent slash piles I have now two pumpkin farms for next year. I have named them Silbury Hillet and The Long Barrow. (Silbury Hill - blog post here ) Having taken me a mere two days and having had the benefit of a wheelbarrow, I have now a well developed respect for those ancients who built a real hill armed (we think) with deer antlers and leather buckets. At the same time I have to call into question their sanity. I mean why? England isn't short on hills and at least mine will turn into a compost heap and grow me some pumpkins. As for the Long Barrow it developed that shape because it is built over a pile of 10-12 foot long gorse and broom bushes that didn't get chopped up by the mechanical mulching machine that ran over the place in December. I expect they will aid good air circulation into my compost heap. Long Barrows (for those living in countries where you don't encounter them) are also ancient. See here for one explanation. Ermine

16km (10 miles) of this connects us to a road that leads to civilization That hill in the background is the high ground above/behind our community. View from my caravan as the rain set in on Thursday evening View on a better day It surprised one of my English friends to see a photo of our road and learn there is 10 miles of that which follows the coast round two major headlands, through a tiny community called Wakaretu, and right round our inlet/bay (which you see the top of in the last photo) down to our community. We are kind of on the third major headland up the Sound. The shrouded hill is across the water from me looking back towards town. Hills with their shoulders draped in cloud like a casually worn ermine wrap seem to be a common feature here especially on clear mornings - this sort of thing Ermine Speaking of ermine, I have introduced myself to the local woman who manages the bait stations and trap lines around here.
