Week Plus

Golly where does the time go? Last Tuesday vanished somehow after receiving a call from my my late father's younger brother. Uncle N and Aunty B live in Aus but are visiting NZ to catch up with family. Passing through Havelock on their way to Nelson, they hoped to catch us en route. I'd not seen N since Dad died 14 years ago - I could however recognize a family member from the other end of town... walks like my grandfather, looks like my grandmother... Lovely to see them and share a meal in a local eatery. Wednesday was a day of heavy rain (we got 88mm - about 3.5 inches) which we only partly escaped by going over to Nelson where I had an interview to be 'apprenticed' as a Pilates teacher. The course starts next February and I will be on it. Thursday was also a day of rain but we charged into Blenheim to pick up some of the materials for building a potting shed. I have dug all the holes for piles and we got those cemented in over the weekend. Friday however was a...

Hijacked

Mum wants to hijack my blog to publish a knitting pattern she has designed and written. I shouldn't let her do it but she isn't very tech savvy and she doesn't know how else to link it to her Ravelry account. She no longer has a blog of her own (deleted her old email address and locked herself out of the blog - stupid woman - but you can see the remnants of it here Mum's Baking Blog ) I'm making this as difficult as possible for her - sleeping with my face on the lefthand end of her keyboard. She has SHIFT and CTL on the other end but I have control of the letter A and my chin on the Caps Lock. She is very persistent, but she still hasn't worked out how to make it into a downloadable .pdf ( edit - oh yes she has Mr T -a lot can happen in 24 hours!) Oh alright then put it here but I disown the content from here on (unless there is money for catfood in it.......) pattern as .pdf file Koko Jacket and Hat Materials: 2 skeins Lanas Stop Norman...

Fiddleheads

No rest for the wicked... I must have been particularly evil this last week or two. My word it has seemed busy... Bro and SiL came by last weekend in their new (to them) motorhome and we had a couple of days of their company, some extra walks, a bit of fishing… It was great to have visitors come and share our little backwater retreat. We followed them south a day or so later- mainly to dig Mr B's stand-up paddleboard out of the house lot of boxes stored in Bro's shed. I'd also bought myself a fancy new line-trimmer (strimmer, whipper-snipper, weed whacker; what are they called where you live?) and needed to pick it up from our friendly tool supplier in Ashburton. Ashburton is a long way to go for tools but given the rate at which I'm buying such stuff it's kind of like having your own trusted drug dealer. Two days was all I was prepared to spend separated from my tiny water-dependent plants so it was a day of moving boxes, finding random things that 'might b...

Curtains

Browsing the Blenheim ReUse shop (as I do every time I go to town in the hope I will score a suitable shower tray/base for our cabin ensuite) I did score this curtain. $10. It jumped out at me - rich colour that would add depth and contrast to all that light wood. I still love it now that it's hanging up. (phew) It must have come from a remarkable house; it's length was twice the height of our doors. I cut it to length, hemmed by hand, and will use the off-cut to make folding blinds for the windows. Today it's raining outside. Scully is asleep on the bed beside Mr B (her towel lying discarded in the doorway), and I'm knitting a lined beanie hat - red inside, camo-green outside. The water tank is refilling nicely.

Ferment

She did it on Saturday. There was a long list on the kitchen whiteboard with some blue writing that stood out from all the other green writing that said : ferment the chilies And then they looked like this and this All those chilies we harvested this year came out of the freezer and got chopped into brine and have been left to go fizzy. Would you eat this stuff? Well I wouldn't eat chilies in any form. Aunty Panagiota used to come over here and sit on my balcony munching on fresh ones! Hmmmmmm! I think even she is skeptical about this fermented chili sauce business. The little one is tabasco. The big one has everything else (Jalapeno, Serrano, some Spanish variety, garlic, onions, carrots... the kitchen sink....). Humans do eat some strange and dangerous things.
